All serious students of Spanish should have this book!

This is a very good book on the varieties of Spanish spoken in the Americas. In addition to a general description of the factors involved in differentiating the Spanish of different countries, it goes through each country with Spanish as their official language and talks about the lexical, syntactic, and other aspects of the dialects. It also mentions special characteristic vocabulary of each country.

It's marketed as a linguistics book, which it is, but I say that all serious students of Spanish should buy it because the Spanish you learn in the classroom is going to be representative of a small segment of the Spanish world in general at best. There is such a variety of Spanish spoken in Latin America and some of it, sadly, you get very little knowledge of. As long as you're only speaking in your classroom, it doesn't matter that much. But as soon as you step outside and try to start speaking with native speakers of one country or another, you become painfully aware that your general Spanish education has been missing a few things.

For example, all Spanish students learn there are three main forms of the second-person pronouns: "tú", "usted", and "ustedes." Many student also know that in Spain they use "vosotros," but not in the Americas. Well, in my recent experiences I find out that sometimes (in formal speech, especially in Bible quotes) "vosotros" is used in the Americas (I went to Costa Rica), and that there is yet another second- person pronoun, "vos", that has its own rules; conversely, in some countries (Costa Rica, Argentina, and some others), "tú" is used very rarely, at least among native speakers. On the other hand, they will readily use "tú" with foreigners like me. This explains why central American speakers immediately use "tú" with me, yet they may use "usted" or "vos" among themselves.

I give my "vos" example to point out where this book really shines. It explains in great detail the tendancies of people to either use or refrain from using "vos" and how it stacks up against "tú" and even "usted", country-by-country. It describes the class stigmas and norms associated with each form in each country. This is information that you just can't get in a Spanish class. Even if there was time, you may not get it: I asked a friend who is a Spanish teacher, and she doesn't even know about "vos". Her teachers may not have either.

This book does not cover the Spanish of Spain to any great extent (obviously), nor does it spend much space on Spanish of the United States. The latter would be interesting and would further one's main purpose in reading this book. The only coverage I've found of US Spanish is related to Mexican Spanish, which shows a bit of a western US bias. Here in the east, we have more Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, and (in my area of Washington, D.C.) Salvadorans and Peruvians than Mexicans. To see how these various native language forms interact with English would be interesting and add to the value of the book. It also does not cover other countries whose language is not officially Spanish yet have large Spanish-speaking populations, such as Brazil and the Phillipines. On the other hand, the book would have to be frightfully long to cover all this.

My other little problem with the book is that it's written a bit from what I would call an "anti-snob-snobbery" view: that the ideas of language standards are antiquated and that people should never strive to change the way they speak to fit what they term "prestige norms." This is, I take it, the same idea behind Ebonics: the way people is speak is just fine, no matter how it is; and that any attempt to change your linguistic habits to conform to norms (of any type) is ill-advised and comes only under pressure from the man. I don't agree with this idea, at least not in full. I would agree that no form of language is (objectively, and based solely on linguistic criteria) "better" than any other. Thus, with the author, I don't believe it's true that the closer the spoken Spanish matches the written Spanish, the "better" it is from some grand, almost moral, point of view. Similarly, in another realm, English is no "better" than American Sign Language; for that matter, English is no "better" than Spanish (and, which is often forgotten, vice-versa).

But it's not a matter of "better" in some moral sense: it's a matter of ease of communication, of being able to work together effectively toward a common goal, of feeling comfortable with other people, and making them feel comfortable with you. People naturally want greater ease and comfort of communication: I see nothing wrong with letting them get it. If they want to change their linguistic habits (our way of speaking is, after all, simply a habit: it might have been different), it's their affair, and I don't blame them at all. Or let's turn it around: why should I bother learning to imitate a particular accent in speaking Spanish? Why not just speak Spanish like the gringo that I am? "Yaou taingouw much-uh ham-bree." (Gringo-ese for "Yo tengo mucha hambre.") Answer: because I want to fit in with people and make them at ease with me.

Finally, I should mention that since it is a linguistics book, it assumes knowledge of things like the IPA alphabet, the difference between a fricative and a velar, etc. If you're not a linguistics student you'll probably have to do a little outside reading to catch up.

However, I urge you to look past (possible) philosophical disagreements and linguistics impediments and buy this book. It'll do wonders for your Spanish and give you great insights into the minds of Latin Americans.

An Excellent Introduction to Spatial Analysis

This is a great book that was a real help in getting me through school and in my first jobs afterwards. It provides the clearest explanation of various spatial statistical techniques that I found (after an extensive literature review for a Masters thesis). The software package is great, particularly because it allows the reader to see all the theory in action in a graphical way.

Highly practical dictionary of American English

The more I use Longman Advanced American Dictionary (LAAD), the more I find myself liking it. It is a highly practical reference tool on how to say things correctly or write something properly. Not as detailed as Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD), but less crowded and easier to use. In fact, for the type of audience it targets, LAAD is the closest competition to OALD solely dedicated to the American, rather than British, English. (Be it mentioned, however, that Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary overall will blow any competition out of the water).

The Strengths of Longman Advanced American Dictionary:
1. Generous and fairly comprehensive corpus of words and phrases with numerous clear examples of their usage and guidelines regarding the context in which such words/phrases are used in the American English.
2. A nice colored section on American trivia
3. A short but useful pictorial dictionary section
4. Short blurbs on famous people (artists, scientists, sports stars, actors, political figures) that shaped American history and culture, often with photos of these people; descriptions of important US places (cities, geographical areas and landmarks) are also included.
5. Two separate sections on TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) and TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) preparation. Even though they are of no practical use to me, it was still interesting to browse through these sections, and I can see how they might be helpful to someone who is planning to take these tests.
6. A descriptive pronunciation section that addresses subtle nuances of the American English (e.g. that in American speech, "dog" rhymes with "frog", but not with "cog").

The Drawbacks of Longman Advanced American Dictionary:
1. This dictionary is not for people who primarily need a dictionary for... well, word definition. Definitions are given in a very simplistic manner. It is surprising to me that a publication bearing the title "advanced" defines words on a grade-school level (e.g. in the entry for the word "peyote" one will find the following:

Now compare this to the definition from Webster's New World Collegiate Dictionary:
I realize that Longman Publishing House prides itself on defining all dictionary entries using only a basic set of 2,000 words, but I still strongly believe that such approach impoverishes the book as a whole. An advanced user should know full well what "hallucinogenic" means, and should be given definitions accordingly, on an advanced level.
2. The phonetic transcription is an awkward modification of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Longman either should have stuck with the IPA (the way OALD does), or utilized the phonetic transcription utilized in America by Webster's and American Heritage dictionaries.
3. It helps somewhat to know that A.A. Milne is a famous British writer of children's books, but it would have been quite a bit more useful to mention that he was the author of Winnie the Pooh stories.
4. No origin of the words (etymology) is included. Once again, a shortcoming for the advanced level.
5. The pronunciation of the verb to slough is listed as rhyming with "cow", instead of "puff". A somewhat surprising oversight on the part of Longman. The noun slough is transcribed correctly, however. So far, this has been the only notable error I have come across after a fairly detailed perusal of the dictionary.

Students love it

This is a wonderful book for ESL students. The definitions are easy to understand, and the examples really help clarify the meaning and use of each word. There are also pictures of many things that aid in definition. I recommend it for intermediate - advanced ESL students. It is much clearer than a dictionary written for native English speakers.

The Undisputed King of Paper Back Dictionaries

I collect dictionaries up to doubles and triples to give away to "worthies" and although this dictionary has a very obvious English as second language orientation or perhaps because of it , its definitions have an almost muscular clarity and precision lacking in all other dictionaries of its size.I used this dictionary to tutor Georgian immigrants but was myself swept away by its concise thoroughness and rigorous practicality. The international praises and reactions that are included from experts abound with understatement.
Sense discriminations are always broken down with breath taking efficacy and its treatment of idiomatic English is stunning.
The other two dictionaries, but both hard back collegiate size, that induce me to sing continual praises are the Websters New World, any edition and Webster's Merriam Collegiate, 10th Edition and up. But rather than rely on my own personal excitement ,go to any library and check out this little known lexicographic marvel yourself.

Good book

The author covers the period wherein European colonization reached it's peak.
The French were building a huge colonial empire in Africa, The Dutch were extending there influence in Indonesia and the British were active on all continents. And also Portugal and some 'newcomers' had their overseas colonies.

Wesseling is focusing on politics, wars and colonial systems. He has a very clear writing style what makes the book a good read. It's significant that the book is translated into six languages.....

Great Book

As a college student with a good background in history, I bought this book as a pleasure read to fill in the gap in understanding I had about European Imperialism. In practice, the book gives a sweeping history of colonial empires from the 16th century up to 1919. The broad scope of the text means that you should expect the most important facts concerning each topic but not an in depth narrative of colonial development in each region. On the whole, the book was very informative and met the author's professed goal of giving considerable attention to the colonial empires of European nations that are usually cast into the shadow of the British Empire. Still, some aspects were lacking. For example, there was nearly no focused discussion of Britain's most important colonial holdings -- India, Australia, and Canada being mentioned only in passing. Additionally, the book was scant on facts for political crises such as "The Great Game" and Anglo-French tensions in Indochina. On all other fronts, however, the author did a thorough job, giving strong summaries of the history of the rest of the colonial world in a somewhat detailed and very concise fashion.

Best book about the European Colonial Empire. It was informative. The information was nicely divided. Wesseling writes the book in a interesting manner. Its not boring. Its not overwhelming. It was a good choice for a reseach paper.

It examines the role of intonation in clarifying the relationship between successive utterances, from close cohesive ties ('middles') to major breaks for a new topic ('ends' and 'beginnings').
The book is concerned chiefly with the intonational structuring of read or prepared monologue, but also devotes a chapter to current developments in the analysis of intonation in conversation. It describes not only how intonation is used to organise systematic turn-taking but also how it can signal greater or lesser degrees of co-operativeness. It addresses finally the complex issue of attitudinal intonation - the elusive 'tone of voice'.

simple in content but difficult in vocabulary

This book approaches pragmatics from a very different angle: interaction between interlocutors in a conversation or some sort of speech events like that. Due to this fact, I guess, some classicial subdomains of pragmatics are not included, such as presupposition and deixis, and issues like politeness are mentioned. As a nonnative speaker of English, I find it a little bit difficult to leave my dictionaries (note the plural forms of dictionary) far away from me. The wide variety of words with heavey culture-specific information make it hard for even proficient speakers to get the gist immediately.
It appears strange to me that why Thomas does not mention the taxanomy she discuss in her article published in Applied Linguistics in 1983. Has she aborted the distinction between sociopragmatics and pragmalinguistics?

relevant to pragmatics and discourse analysis

This has to be one of the top five books I read in applied linguistics studies. That said, it serves as an introduction, its beauty being it leaves you with a good general sense of pragmatics. It is so clearly written and presented that I was able to 'get it' from one thorough read. It covers the great three: Austin, Searle, Grice and lots of other major contributors to politeness theory. Honestly, this has to be the definitive intro to pragmatics and I wouldn't be surprised if it goes into the next edition.
