Until recently, the study of Scotland's economic and social development in the centuries before the Industrial Revolution has lagged behind research on England. Yet Scotland's story is a very remarkable one, and demands careful examination. For, starting from a much lower baseline than her larger and wealthier neighbour, Scotland underwent a major transformation in the later years covered by this book, which enabled her to industrialise alongside England in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. How was it that such a small, poor, underpopulated country on the periphery of Europe was able to claim a place in history as one of first industrial economies of the modern world? What were the conditions in early modern Scotland that made such an unlikely advance possible? After years of comparative neglect, the last two decades have seen a dramatic upsurge of new research into Scotland before the Industrial Revolution which has enriched our knowledge of these centuries, and altered our understanding of their significance for Scotland's subsequent development. These new perspectives inform Ian Whyte's survey throughout. In it, he pays due attention to the wide regional variations within Scotland itself, and to the distinctive elements of her economy and society; but he also highlights the many parallels between the Scottish experience and that of her neighbours, especially England. The result sets Scotland within both a British and a European context. For anyone studying the development of the Scottish people, this book will be necessary reading; but it has a wider value, too, for students of British economic and social history more generally, since it provides a freshperspective on a subject too often dominated by its English dimension. The ¿three kingdoms¿ or 'four nations' which became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801 have distinct, but not separate, histories. Sensitive questions of religion, local loyalty, and allegiance to the state, shaped politics within and between the four nations - and still give an edge to politics in parts of modern Britain.

In 1660, the restoration of Charles II to all three of his kingdoms, was followed by an attempt to impose religious uniformity across his kingdoms. It failed. The make-up of the British Isles was too diverse. Tories, Jacobites, radicals and Whigs each had strong links to a Church or religious faction. Politics and religion could intermingle dangerously. Fear of popery was a major cause of the revolution of 1688, and at the beginning of the eighteenth century Presbyterians led Scottish opposition to a union until they were recognised as an established church. At the end of the century the architects of the act of union with Ireland hoped, finally, to resolve the 'Catholic Question', but (as it does today) constitutional change brought issues of national identity to the fore.

The eighteenth century witnessed the triumph of unionism on the larger island, and the rise of nationalism and separatism across the Irish sea. The Making of the United Kingdom seeks to explain that crucial divergence, and gives an incisive account of the forging of Britishness ¿ the sense of a new nation.

A quality survey of the Late Middle Ages

Scholarly materials dedicated to the late Middle Ages are not always easy to locate. This book, despite the fact that it is basically a textbook, is engaging and interesting. It gives a relatively detailed overview of the period and contains some solid analysis of this transitional period in European history. I thought the prose was good and overall this book was insightful despite the fact that it covered such a wide range of material.

Detailed but poorly written Medieval history

There is no doubt that the author knows his stuff. He provides a thorough introduction to the major themes of the late Medieval/early Renaissance period. However, he has all the flair of a mortician and he systematically sucks the oxygen out of the subject. Furthermore, his writing style uses awkward sentence constructions that leave the reader stumbling through his prose, getting lost, bogged down and frustrated. As an avid historian, I now understand why some people have grown up hating the subject.

I'm currently enrolled in a linguistics class at Tulane University, and we had to read this book so as to give us a cognitivist perspective on semantic theory. It is a well-written book with very helpful exercises to illustrate various experiments performed by linguists and psychologists.

This second edition of The History of the English Language: A Sourcebook provides a comprehensive and accessible guide to the origins and development of the English language. First published in 1992, the book contains over fifty illustrative passages, drawn from the oldest English to the twentieth century. The passages are contextualised by individual introductions and grouped into the traditional periods of Old English, Early Middle English, Later Middle English, Early Modern English and Modern English. These periods are connected by brief essays explaining the major linguistic developments associated with each period, to produce a continuous outline history.

Lots of great sources, background and commentary. Eclectic and almost unusable index, good variety of texts (not just the seminal ones) up to 190s. Perhaps it is best on Old and Middle English. Translations given up to and after Chaucer (thank God!). Some useful reproductions of original texts. A wonderful reference and resource.

First published in 1988, Alison Brown¿s Seminar Study on the Renaissance soon established itself as one of the most popular and useful books on the subject. For this expanded Second Edition the book¿s basic structure remains the same, but the author has taken the opportunity to rewrite the text entirely in the light of the wealth of literature which has been published over the past decade and the new directions Renaissance studies have taken. In particular, there are two new chapters, one on the rise of lordships and the impact of the Black Death and one on Renaissance theatre; the bibliography has also been thoroughly updated. As before, the main focus of the book is on the influence of classical ideas on Italy, and although Florence is still central to the book its uniqueness is now viewed more critically.

Alison Brown argues that although the Renaissance was not a movement in isolation, it was unique in many ways. She identifies the elements in society, culture and politics which were influenced by the movement and assesses the speed and the extent to which changes actually took place. Central to her argument is the belief that although the republican language of freedom and individualism encouraged the revival of classical ideas, this should not itself be taken as evidence of progress. She also tackles the means by which the Renaissance movement laid down its roots and spread across Europe.

The author¿s incisive use of some of the mass of documentation that abounds for this period helps readers to focus on the central issues and arguments surrounding the Renaissance. Now revised and updated, this Second Edition is sure to be welcomed by a new generation of students struggling to get to grips with this complex topic.

About the Author
Alison Brown is a Senior Lecturer in the School of City & Regional Planning at Cardiff University, and an urban planning consultant specializing in international planning practice. She is course director for the MSc in International Planning & Development, and has undertaken extensive research and consultancy in the developing world--in Southern and West Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. She has recently managed a Department for International Development-funded study on street trading and livelihoods on which the book is based.

Today, the importance of oil remains at the forefront of the West's foreign policy calculations in the Middle East. In this fascinating and timely new look at the oil crisis, Fiona Venn examines these issues and the more unexpected effects of the crisis. She asks just how much really changed in the economic balance of power. Oil is one of the biggest issues of the twenty first century. This highly topical book sets the scene, showing the impact today of the oil crisis on the Arab-Israeli conflict, American involvement in the Middle East, and in the oil rich states of the Persian Gulf.

In this book, the author examines both the causes and the consequences of these events not only within the oil industry and the Middle East, but also their impact on the world economy, the role of Third World nations in the international system, and relations between the leading oil consuming nations. She demonstrates how the effects of the oil crisis lasted throughout the rest of the twentieth century and beyond.

Fiona Venn is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Essex. Her many books include `The New Deal¿ (1998) and `Oil Diplomacy in the Twentieth Century¿ (1986).
