This is precisely what Mr Waley does, approaching deliberately from several different angles: political, economic, religious, artistic and intellectual. He quotes contemporary sources in lively translation. Above all he is guided by a central thread, which is the growth of power in the state and the reflection of this in the development of political ideas."The Times Educational Supplement The book opens with a description of monarchies and city states in the thirteenth century, and draws to a close with a contrasting account of political philosophies current at the time of Machiavelli, and how they related to the conditions of the early sixteenth century. From the divine right of kings to the unification of Spain, the account takes in a whole period and an entire continent.  This extensively revised and expanded third edition includes even greater use of contemporary voices, full reading lists, and new chapters on East Central Europe and Portuguese exploration which take the narrative beyond the confines of western Europe.  Daniel Waley is a former Professor of History at the University of London and Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Library.  Peter Denley teaches at Queen Mary, University of London.

A quality survey of the Late Middle Ages

Scholarly materials dedicated to the late Middle Ages are not always easy to locate. This book, despite the fact that it is basically a textbook, is engaging and interesting. It gives a relatively detailed overview of the period and contains some solid analysis of this transitional period in European history. I thought the prose was good and overall this book was insightful despite the fact that it covered such a wide range of material.

Detailed but poorly written Medieval history

There is no doubt that the author knows his stuff. He provides a thorough introduction to the major themes of the late Medieval/early Renaissance period. However, he has all the flair of a mortician and he systematically sucks the oxygen out of the subject. Furthermore, his writing style uses awkward sentence constructions that leave the reader stumbling through his prose, getting lost, bogged down and frustrated. As an avid historian, I now understand why some people have grown up hating the subject.

About the Author
Ken Saro-Wiwa, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996, was a novelist, publisher, journalist and human rights activist. He was a committed and tireless campaigner on human rights and environmental issues. In November 1995 he was executed by the Nigerian authorities.

Comments on "Sozaboy"

Ken Saro-Wiwa's book brings us face to face with people we otherwise only see at a distance on TV as masses being hurled about by chaos and war. We see the world through the eyes of the "soldier boy" himself, a world that is perhaps alien to us at first but that increases in familiarity with every increase in compassion and identification with the main character, whom we get to know increasingly as a real human being who lives life differently but fundamentally on our terms also. The novel is a "must read" for anyone who tries to come to terms with the realities of the Third World.

Not a Fan...At All

I understand that the way the book is written and more specifically the language used is supposed to reflect the inner turmoil of the character and the disorganized nature of the country during the war, however I hated the way the book was written. The author himself noted that the language used in the book is nothing like the way people in Nigeria actually speak. On top of that, the Rotten English (actual term) used is very difficult to follow. There are words that have three different meanings, can be used as both a noun and a verb, and will often be used as such in the same sentence, requiring the reader to continuously look up the various meanings in the back of the book. As someone who loves to read and doesn't like to leave a book unfinished, I can honestly say that I never finished this book and don't ever plan to. Unless this book is required for a literature class, don't waste your time.

One of my very favorite books

I read Sozaboy about once a year. I love it. I don't know how many copies I've given away, a dozen at least. I never tire of it.

A key feature of this book is the language. The author calls it "rotten English". Rotten English is a mix of Pidgeon English, corrupted English and good English. The voice is musical and magical. I can hear my West African friends in my ear as I read.

The language is evocative. You are there. You see this man-child move from place to place, from side to side, never really understanding the world around him. What soldier really grasps the meaning and purpose of war? What soldier can really find his or her own place in the chaos? Right and wrong get lost in the meat grinder.

The last paragraph never fails to make me weep.

"And I was thinking how I was prouding before to go to soza and call myself Sozaboy. But now if anybody say anything about war or even fight, I will just run and run and run and run and run. Believe me yours sincerely."

It stands up with the very best anti war fiction.

About the Author
C. M. Charles was a public school teacher from 1953 to 1959, then moved into higher education and held positions at the University of New Mexico, Teachers College Columbia University, Pepperdine University, Universidade Federal do Maranhao (Brazil), and San Diego State University, where he is now professor emeritus. At San Diego State, Charles directed innovative programs in teacher education and five times received outstanding professor and distinguished teaching awards. He also served on several occasions as advisor in teacher education and curriculum to the governments of Peru and Brazil. Charles has authored or co-authored numerous books that have attracted wide audiences in the United States and abroad, with translations into several foreign languages. Those dealing most directly with school discipline are Teachers ' Petit Piaget (1972); The Synergetic Classroom: Joyful Teaching and Gentle Discipline (2000); Essential Elements of Effective Discipline (2002); Classroom Management for Middle Grades Teachers (2004); Elementary Classroom Management (5th edition 2008); Today’s Best Classroom Management Strategies: Paths to Positive Discipline (2008), and  Building Classroom Discipline (10th edition 2011). Charles, who resides in California and Australia, is married and has two children, both teachers.

Great For Teachers

This book I believe is excellent for not only beginning teachers but also those teachers who are in a classroom now. It provides an unbiased account of Educational Theorist. The text looks at what each theorist has recommended from his or her own research in managing classroom behaviour. The book provides strategies for teachers to help control and prevent student misbehaviour. The book not only looks at old Theorist such as Dreikus, Kounin, Skinner but new Theorist such as Canter. It is a must for all teachers to read, allowing them to effectively use strategies suggested by the various theorists in their classroom. I have found the suggested strategies helpful in my own Teaching.

Look Elsewhere for "How-to's"

Building Classroom Discipline is a practical book for a college classroom; however, for the teacher looking for a "how-to" book, there are other books that are better. BCD is wonderful for learning about different theories or studies on discipline, but it doesn't get to the practical stuff until the end of the book. Therefore, if you are looking for a book full of "how-to's", read something else.

This book was used for one of my graduate level courses without the MyEducationLab Component. I found that this lab was not necessary for my use and understanding of the text (this has not been the case with other texts with this component available). The book covers what is and is not a discipline issue, how to recognize discipline issues, and causes of underlying issues that result in discipline problems.

In addition to this information, the book provides an unbiased approach to sharing information on both past and present methods used to correct the issues. Perhaps one of my favorite parts of the book was the detailed information regarding each philosopher. This included books they wrote and their current website. This allowed for easy research if a particular method appealed to me. People/Methods covered include: Ronald Morrish, Harry Wong, Fred Jones, William Glasser, Spencer Kagan, Marvin Marshall, Craig Seganti, Dave Hingsburger, Stephen Covey, Haim Ginott, Jane Nelsen, Lynn Lott, Tom Daly, Richard Curwin, Allen Mendler, Brian Mendler, Ed Ford, Michele Borba, Diane Gossen, Marilyn Page, Benna Golubtchik, Rosemary Shaw, Judy Jones, Nancy Powell, and Eillen Kalberg VanWie.

The final chapter of the book takes you through step by step to create your own professional philosophy of discipline by asking you a series of questions. This is great for the novice teacher just discovering his or own preferences and for the veteran teacher who needs to reflect and improve upon his/her current practices. This last chapter also provides two examples of personal disciple plans that have been created using a combination of the methods mentioned previously in the book.

The student edition of Deer Howie and Zussman is the most important mineralogy book that geology students should have in their collection. It provides information that not only helps while learning mineralogy, but becomes an essential and much consulted reference in later years. By limiting itself to the rock forming minerals it provides the solid information for learning real-world mineralogy without the trivial frills. This is the most consulted book on my bookshelf.

A must if you study minerals

This book is an absolute must for anyone working with minerals in any way. Beeing an introduction to rockforming minerals it is very conprehensive. It is very valuable not only as a textbook but also as a handbook in the lab. As the title says it covers the rockforming minerals so dont expect to find exotic minearls. You can though expect to find a relatively detailed introduction to the most important minerals. It far surpasses any student minaralogy to my knowledge.

An great book. I have the 13th impression of this book published in 1982. We used this book in second year mineralogy and found it very useful not only in mineraology but throughout the remaining years of our geology program at University. The book is easy to use and has all the different groups, ortho- ring silicates, chain silicates, sheet silicates, framework silicates and non silicates and provides information pertaining to properties, crystal structure, chemistry and paragenesis.

This two-volume set (the other half is Volume 2: The Modern Gothic) by David Punter is more than simply a history of the gothic form in American and British literature. It's an ambitious attempt to redefine the word gothic so that it encompasses most of fantastic fiction and film for the past 200 years under a unifying theme: a preoccupation with fear. This is, of course, an extremely broad definition, so don't be surprised if you find yourself taking the theoretical sections of the book with a grain of salt. Also, since the book was first written in the late 1970s, much of the discussion of language and symbol relies on rather outdated Marxist and Freudian theories. Punter apologizes for the latter in the preface to the second edition, saying that rather than doing a massive revision, he decided to "leave it largely as an 'unrestored' period piece, with its own characteristic style, silhouette, and mood"--while adding additional material on the contemporary gothic.

Those caveats aside, however, The Literature of Terror is mostly successful as a comprehensive study. And it's an enormously useful reference for anyone with a more than passing interest in horror literature. Plus, it benefits from being the work of a single author: Punter is an extremely well-read scholar who perceives fascinating connections between a wide variety of books and films, and he explains his ideas lucidly enough that you can judge for yourself how far you agree with them.

Some of the high points are Punter's overview of what the word gothic means in other fields (such as architecture); his summaries of the roles of graveyard poetry, the sentimental novel, and the theory of the sublime in the development of the gothic concept; and his inclusion (as gothic and even horror writers) of such notables as Isak Dinesen, William S. Burroughs, Thomas Pynchon, J.G. Ballard, Angela Carter, Thomas Hawkes, and Robert Coover. If that's not enough to tempt you, the footnotes and bibliography alone offer ample yet well-chosen pointers to authors whose entertaining fiction you may not have discovered yet.

Best of all, The Literature of Terror is written in English--that is, not loaded down with annoying words such as transgressive and trope that mar so much of postmodern criticism. You can browse for information about specific authors or dip into it at your leisure without losing the thread. And for an academic work, it's darn fun to read. David Punter's historical approach to Gothic literature reads like the finest page-turner of the genre he studies. For fans of horror and Gothic, this book will show them exactly how and why it is that they keep coming back to books like Frankenstein and Dracula.
