The Poverty of Structuralism is the first in a sequence of volumes which examine in turn the basic ideas of Saussure, Marx and Freud, and analyse the way in which they have been developed and applied to art, culture and modern textual theory. The text offers a critical introduction to the structuralist foundations of modern literary theory. It gives an account of the way such foundations have been developed, twisted and distorted to become part of the language that contemporary literary and cultural theoreticians use. It also addresses some of the fundamental issues about language and society that are presupposed by the often difficult language of modern literary and cultural theory.

An excellent all-levels access account of structuralism
By richardmoser@hotmail.com
I studies for two semesters with this professor at Middlesex Polytechnic in London, and this volume captures the essence of a portion of a dynamic lecture series on the historical backgrounds of structuralism. Jackson's training is not limited to literature, and his engineering background is evident in his structural/functional view of literary theory. This is a great springboard for investigation into the work of de Saussure, Barthes, Levi-Strauss, and Derrida, with reading lists presented at the end of each chapter to guide further inquiry. An emphasis is placed on primary theoretical texts, rather than the interpretations of later theorists.
The series is followed by a work on Marx, entitled The Dematerialization of Karl Marx, and a (yet to be published) volume on Freud, tenatively entitled The Descientification of Sigmund Freud.

Alfred the Great: War, Kingship and Culture in Anglo-Saxon England, by Richard Philip Abels

This biography of Alfred the Great, king of the West Saxons (871-899), combines a sensitive reading of the primary sources with a careful evaluation of the most recent scholarly research on the history and archaeology of ninth-century England. Alfred emerges from the pages of this biography as a great warlord, an effective and inventive ruler, and a passionate scholar whose piety and intellectual curiosity led him to sponsor a cultural and spiritual renaissance. Alfred's victories on the battlefield and his sweeping administrative innovations not only preserved his native Wessex from viking conquest, but began the process of political consolidation that would culminate in the creation of the kingdom of England.

Alfred the Great: War, Kingship and Culture in Anglo-Saxon England strips away the varnish of later interpretations to recover the historical Alfredpragmatic, generous, brutal, pious, scholarly within the context of his own age.

The influence of Alfred - king of Wessex from 871 to 899 - pervades English history. His victories on the battlefield and his administrative innovations not only preserved his native Wessex from viking conquest, but also began the process of political consolidation and unification that would culminate, within a couple of generations, in the creation of the kingdom of England.

Alfred was a great warrior king, and an effective and inventive ruler. But, even more remarkably, he was also a lover of wisdom, who sought to preserve and disseminate Latin learning by translating into English the books most necessary for all men to know . The spiritual and literary renaissance he spearheaded gave rise to a lasting tradition of English vernacular prose and learning.

He himself claimed that what he most desired was to live a worthy life, and to leave to posterity his memory in good works. This is precisely what he accomplished. Few bearers of the sobriquet the Great have so firm a hold on the title: eleven hundred years after his death, his name still resonates, and modern scholarship has not undermined his reputation. Yet that status carries its own dangers: he seems such a modern figure that each generation is tempted to recreate him in its own image. One of the great virtues of Richard Abels s splendid new study of the king, however, is to strip away the varnish of such later interpretations, in order to recover the historical figure - pragmatic, generous, brutal, pious, scholarly - within the context of Alfred s own age.

The book is timely, fresh and authoritative. It is based throughout on the primary sources, but it also presents a judicious assessment of recent scholarship in interpreting the man and his times. It has been written with a student and non-specialist readership in mind, but fellow specialists will find much in it to stimulate and challenge (and many will especially welcome the re-assertion of Asser s life of Alfred as a key contemporary source for the reign, against recent scholarly attack).

Richard Abels s Alfred convinces as a man who combined within himself the complexities and contradictions of his time. But, fascinating though that portrait is, this is more than just a study of an individual, however Great : the book investigates, and illuminates, the whole nature of warfare, culture and kingship in Anglo-Saxon England.

Captures even the smell of "the burnt cakes"
By Mark Howells
Alfred, being the only English monarch styled "the Great", is a notoriously difficult subject to write history about. The Victorian cult of Alfred made him a marked man for the debunkers of the Dead White European Male focus of history. Attempts at an even-handed review of the Wessex king's life are fraught with peril.
This book does the job magnificently. Alfred the warrior, ruler, innovator, strategist, and moralist are all presented well within the context of a 9th century Anglo-Saxon world. Alfred the pious and Alfred the ruthless are both shown as parts of the same man.
While concluding that Asser's "Life" is a legitimate source of biography for Alfred, the author does not limit himself. Extensive use and comparison between versions of the "Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" is combined with what limited charter evidence survives, archaeological discoveries and an examination of coinage patterns to round out the picture of Alfred and his times.
One major strength of this work is its very careful comparisons of Alfred and his activities to those of predecessor kings of Wessex and successor kings of the Anglo-Saxons. Alfred's reign is not studied in isolation. How Alfred was both traditional and innovative in contrast to his father and brothers helps place Alfred in the context of his times. The legacy which Alfred left his descendants (to become kings of all England) is given special attention.
The author is circumspect in trying to get inside of Alfred's head. Alfred's physical afflictions are examined with an eye to a modern medical diagnosis and their effects on Alfred's personality. Using the marginalia in Alfred's own translations from Latin into the vernacular, the author tries to see inside Alfred the man - all the while cognizant that such a review is only speculative.
This is a great book and a very good read.

Really well done biography of Alfred the Great
By Kiwi
This is a good solid and concise biography of King Alfred (871-99) that is not just a synthesis of earlier and current work, but also includes some new research and interpretations by the author. It consists of a chronological narrative with an introduction and background chapter, a short epilogue, and three thematic chapters on "The Defence of the Realm," "The Reign of Solomon," and "The Practice of Kingship" as an interlude between the death of Guthrum in 890 and the new invasion by vikings under Hasteinn in 892. Abels has a keen sense of both the significance of Alfred to his own time and the shifting place the king has occupied in the historiography of his reign - which it seems has become a bit of a battlegound of alternate views in itself. Abels places his work in the context of the work of others without making and criticisms of other's research.

In Abels book, what stands out first and foremost is that the author creates a three-dimensional sense of space. He not only has visited many of the sites he discusses --his "Alfred pilgrimage of 1989" as he calls it - but he has tested them out. For instance, in March of 878, while Alfred was a refugee from Danish invaders in Wessex, he established a camp at Athelney in the Somerset marshes from which he launched his assault on the Danes. In Asser's near contemporary account, "King Alfred, with a few men, made a fortress at a place called Athelney, and from that fortress with the thegns of Somerset he again waged war ceaselessly and tirelessly against the heathens". After pointing to the site's high ground that would serve as a "natural lookout," Abels adds: "It is difficult for a modern visitor to envision Athelney as an 'island' rising out of the marshes; erosion and tractors have considerably lowered the hill . . . and the Somerset fens have long since been drained. What does impress one, though, is how small the site is: about 365 paces long and 50 paces across" - about the size of a football field. Given the confined space at Athelney, Abels calculates that Alfred probably had at most one hundred men with whom to begin the reconquest of Wessex, which makes the king's accomplishment all the more remarkable. Even when it is unclear whether such personal visits were undertaken, Abels' ability to characterize setting is superb: on the size of Rome to ninth-century English pilgrims, Abels says all of Saxon Southampton (Hamwic), the "greatest commercial town of Wessex," would fit into the Baths of Caracalla. A measurement like this conveys more than any statistic or pages of description.

The book itself covers King Alfred's life and his kingdom's history, but the actual biography is really just the skeleton around which a lot of broader, more circumstantial evidence is set out. This is pretty much a common format for biographies of medieval (and earlier) subjects where sources are often scarce. Alfred is probably easier than many to deal with as her had a contemporary biographer, his will survived, as did his law code and some of his own translations of biblical and other works. It's an impressively detailed work and it's thoughtful (and well thought out) - his conclusions seem to be based on a sound basis without making wild leaps of conjecture - for example, in his discussion of Alfred's illness - the "agonizing infirmity" Alfred suffered throughout his life - Abels refers to modern interpretations of the king's affliction as Crohn's disease, but admits that it can only ever be "an attractive possibility" given the state of the evidence.

He also devotes a separate appendix to assessing claims against the authenticity of Asser's Life of Alfred: this is a fair and thoughtful consideration of the arguments of V. H. Galbraith and Alfred Smyth, arguments which Abels rejects. Elsewhere, he alerts readers to the existence of debates and offers a summary of rival positions or qualifications of standard positions (e.g., on extrapolating from dies to estimate circulation of coinage). All information that I, as a reader, found both interesting and relevant. The book itself is, if you're interest in the subject, both clearly structured and interesting (I was going to say fun, but that really depends on you as the reader....). Abels also has a good sense of humour which comes through here and there - for example, he sums up the account of Alfred's ninth-century delegation to "India" - a perplexing event given the times - with a small dose of Wordsworth on the subject. "But," he opines, "as the better Victorian scholars realized, Alfred as a prefigurement of Clive was too good to be true," and Abels offers W. H. Stevenson's conclusion that it was Edessa, and (alas for later imperialists) not "British" India, to which Alfred was directing England's attention.

The book has been cleanly produced with a minimum of typos and editing errors, and with useful maps, a genealogy, and a guide to further reading.

In Thomas Hardy: Selected Poems Tim Armstrong brings together over 180 poems in the first comprehensively annotated selection of Hardy’s poetry. Unlike most previous selections, this edition preserves the shape of the poet’s career by presenting the poems in the order in which they appeared in the Collected Poems of 1930, rather than re-ordering them thematically.

Head notes to each poem give the reader information about its composition, publication, sources and metrical scheme; on-the-page notes list significant variants in Hardy’s manuscripts, point out literary and other allusions, and give explanatory glosses. An appendix contains a selection of relevant passages from Hardy’s notebooks, letters, and autobiography; and a bibliography suggests further reading.

Tim Armstrong’s critical Introduction discusses Hardy’s career, his poetics, his use of memory and allusion and examines his position in the context of Victorian debates on aesthetics and belief. The generous selection of poems includes many lesser-known poems as well as those which have received most critical commentary, and the important elegiac sequence ‘Poems of 1912-13’ is included in its entirety.

Tim Armstrong is Professor of Modern English and American Literature at Royal Holloway, University of London, and author of Haunted Hardy: Poetry, History, Memory (2000).

The war in Vietnam was a seminal event in post-1945 world affairs. The conflict had a profound and lasting impact on the politics and society of Vietnam and the United States, but also shaped the larger international system in critical ways. This volume provides an authoritative and accessible introduction to the origins of the war. It situates the developments from the French colonial period to the eruption of major war in 1965 in their larger global setting - how Vietnamese affairs were shaped by - and in turn shaped - developments outside Vietnam. The Origins of theVietnam War looks at:

  • Why France colonized Indochina in the late 19th century, and why that colonial venture ended in defeat at the hands of Ho Chi Minh's Vietminh in 1954.
  • Why the 1954 Geneva Agreement failed to bring long-term peace to Indochina.
  • Why the United States opted to make a commitment to the creation of an   independent, non-communist South Vietnam.
  • Why a major war developed in 1965, with the US and South Vietnam on one side  and the National Liberation Front and North Vietnam, backed by China and the Soviet Union on the other.
  • Whether the war could have been avoided.
Containing a Guide to Characters, Chronology and detailed Bibliography, The Origins of the Vietnam War provides an indispensable introduction to one of the most important events in recent history.

The best "shorter history of the various wars in Vietnam to 1965" you will read
By Constitutional Lawyer
An excellent "short history" of the various conflicts in Vietnam starting in the early 19th century through to 1965.

Long on facts, long on dispassionate analysis. A "must read stand-alone" and excellent backgrounder also for anything else you will read as to the period in question.

After the historical discussion and analysis comes a series of important documents, necessary for an understanding of the period.

Essential.

Great companion to EMBERS OF WAR
By Motown
I enjoy Longeval's book EMBERS OF WAR so I bought this as a companion piece. Although not as long or detailed as EOW, Origins met my expectations. It offers a concise history of how the U.S. got involved in Vietnam during the Kennedy-Johnson era. It includes a documents section as well as source citations.

Excellent contribution to the literature
By Harry
I have read just about every historical analysis of the Vietnam War, having taught a university course on the war and media representations of the war for twenty years. This is a fine contribution to the analysis.

The First World War Peace Settlements, 1919-1925, by Erik Goldstein

The First World War changed the face of Europe - two empires (the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire) collapsed in its wake and as a result many of the boundaries of Europe were redrawn and new states were created.   The origins of many of the international crises in the late twentieth century can be traced back to decisions taken in these critical years, Yugoslavia being the most obvious example. An understanding of the peace settlements is thus crucial for any student studying international history/international relations, which is what this book offers.
This book provides and accessible and concise introduction to this most important period of history.

The First World War peace settlements were the most complex rearrangement of the international system ever attempted. They are the starting point for many of today¿s flashpoints, as well as the origins of the current international system.

The emergence of ethnocentric states, disputed borders, arms control and international governance are just some of the issues facing the international system today that have their origins in the post First World War period. Erik Goldstein¿s The First World War Peace Settlements covers the period from the end of the First World War through to the 1925 Locarno Pact, and focuses on events which occurred at the Paris Peace Conference, where the broad outlines of the postwar order were worked out.

Areas covered include:

The dramatic leap forward of international governance The principle of war crimes trials The establishment of a Permanent Court of International Justice The creation of an International Labour Organization Arms control Written in a clear and accessible manner, the book also contains maps, a glossary, chronology and documents section to provide students with an invaluable guide to the First World War Peace Settlements and their relevance to events in international relations today. Provides rudimentary coverage of its topic
By Yoda
This book, primarily due to its very short length (about 92 pages of text) and the incredible complexity of its topic, only provides a rudimentary discussion of its topic. It provides short chapters on the Treaty of Versailles, the resulting new nation states, the League of Nations, the Treaty of Locarno, the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean resulting from the war, the situation in the Far East resulting from the war and the Washington Naval Agreement. All and all quite a bit, especially considering the breadth of the topic and the fact that it is only 92 pages in length. The author does a fairly good job at summing these topics up in that 92 pages. However, because of length of book and complexity of topic he basically can only touch upon the topics. Thus for someone who has little or no knowledge the book would prove of some use. However, for those with more than a rudimentary knowledge the book would add very little, if anything, to their knowledge base.

Above the 92 pages of text, there is also a 30 some page appendix that covers many of the important speeches, documents, etc. referenced in the books main text. For example, there is the full speech of Wilsons on his 14 points made to Congress, Clemenceau's views of the Versailles Treaty well after it was signed, etc. All of these are quite interesting but unfortunately take up valuable space that could have been better used to elaborate on the main topics covered in the book (i.e., extend the book's paltry 92 pages of text). For example, Wilson's speech could have been summarized in a few paragraphs instead of being printed in full.

A historiography summary of the WWI peace settlements
By Mary @ *Buried Under Romance*
This book's length intends it not to be an analysis on post-WWI peace settlements, but rather a historiography of the events that occurred, and the individual agendas of the "Big Four" - the U.S., Great Britain, France, and to an extent, Italy. The chapters are outlined with peace aims, actual settlements and German reparations, the "Spirit of Locarno," the state of the West after WWI, and a very brief conclusion on the success and failures of the peace settlements in accord with each major leader's agendas.

Essentially, this book has more breadth than depth, but it is good as an introductory book to outline the time between the end of WWI and the rise of Hitler. Good for essays on the high school level, but not much beyond.

Dense and Informative
By Aaron Oswald
The book is dense. It is a textbook, but it is only 168 pages. It is packed with event after event. Primary sources abound and it is full of detailed dating. It is lite on analysis, which is ok. That is the students' job.

Investigating Town Planning: Changing Perspectives and Agendas (Introduction To Planning Series), by Clara Greed

Following on from Introducing Town Planning andImplementing Town Planning, this third volume in the series examines the scope and nature of modern town planning in greater depth. It investigates the theories and preoccupations which inform the current planning agenda, compares this with earlier objectives, and discusses likely future trends.

Written by a team of expert contributors under the general editorship of Clara Greed, the book begins with a review of town planning and then goes on to discuss the major themes in five parts:

  • the economic context of town planning
  • planning for housing
  • planning for sustainability
  • planning for city centres or decentralisation
  • changing agendas and agencies

Within this contextualising framework the contributors investigate many of the current, and often conflicting, urban policy issues challenging the planning profession. Over and above a commitment to traditional, physical land use matters, planning practitioners nowadays must take on board new priorities, deriving from the environmental movement, the European Union, the economic climate, changing local authority structures, and legislative frameworks. The contributors discuss these new agendas, and demonstrate how they link to inner city regeneration, city centre management, sustainability issues, and wider social policy and urban governance questions.

This volume incorporates a more discursive and reflective approach to studying, and thus constitutes a valuable text for final year undergraduate and postgraduate courses in town planning, surveying, building, architecture, and housing, as well as RTPI, RICS, CIOH, CIOB, ASI, ISVA and RIBA courses. It will be of interest to a wider readership studying urban economics, urban sociology, social policy and urban geography, and to young professionals in both the public and private sector of the property world.

The Rise and Fall of the The Soviet Economy: An Economic History of the USSR from 1945, by Philip Hanson

Why did the Soviet economic system fall apart? Did the economy simply overreach itself through military spending? Was it the centrally-planned character of Soviet socialism that was at fault? Or did a potentially viable mechanism come apart in Gorbachev's clumsy hands? Does its failure mean that true socialism is never economically viable? The economic dimension is at the very heart of the Russian story in the twentieth century. Economic issues were the cornerstone of  soviet ideology and the soviet system, and economic issues brought the whole system crashing down in 1989-91. This book is a record of what happened, and it is also an analysis of the failure of Soviet economics as a concept.

"lucid and compelling study." European History Quarterly

From the Back Cover

The Cold War was not solely about weapons and military threats; it was also a contest of economic strength. In the 1950's and 1960's many believed, in both East and West, that the Soviet Union presented a serious economic challenge to the capitalist West. We all know now that the economic challenge failed. But how and why did it fail?

The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Economy

draws on personal experience and literary sources, including memoirs, as well as available economic data and analyses, to illustrate the reality of everyday life and of economic policy making in the post-war Soviet Union. The author argues that the Soviet economic system was capable of producing economic growth, and did for most of its existence exhibit growth. But it revealed over a time a key weakness compared with capitalism: a systemic inability to cope well with technological change, which doomed the Soviet economy in the long-run. Moreover, 'success' in partially liberalising Soviet society, so that terror receded into the background, reduced the effectiveness of a top-downeconomic system that relied on authority and obedience.

Combining skilful economic, political and social analysis, The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Economy provides a fascinating insight into the decline of the Soviet Union.

Philip Hanson is Emeritus Professor of the Political Economy of Russia and Eastern Europe at The University of Birmingham.

Interesting if this is your area
By Crayton Caswell
I've been studying economic history for a few years now, and there simply aren't enough economy-focused books out there about socialism to give serious study to. I think it's a shame, and I plan on writing something within that niche eventually.
Trying to cover the economic trends of the entire Soviet Union is basically impossible, because the systems in the various Eastern Bloc countries were so different. Hungary and Yugoslavia, for example, had systems with a stronger market basis than Russia did. The author here concentrates on Russia.
That said, the book is still very broad scope, and only in a minimal fashion does it delve into personal lives or individual views within the system. Still, it's engagingly written and well thought-out. The basic information about the structure of the system, and the changes it went through as different leaders rose to power, is comprehensive and easy to understand, even if you don't have a long background in economics. Some of the information is, as a matter of human interest, just fascinating to read. If you're interested in this period and subject, then this book should be one of the 'foundation' books that gives you a basis on how things worked. Hopefully, more in this field will be written soon.

Really interesting analysis of command economy of the USSR, with all its flaws and limitations.
By Bayard B.
Very good analysis of the origin, decline, and fate of the command economy of the USSR. Lots of statistical data and interpretation. There is almost no analysis of the effects of the massive military spending on the overall economy that occurred during the 1960s and 1970s. The author's clear contention is that even ignoring the effects of military spending, the Soviet economy had serious built - in flaws and limitations. There is some hint and discussion of the likely apathy of the Soviet work force resulting from the Terror of the 1930s and 1940s and the overall poor standard of living for most of the populace afterwards in the 1970s and 1980s. Well worth reading.

The Spanish-American War 1895-1902: Conflict in the Caribbean and the Pacific (Modern Wars In Perspective), by Joseph Smith

Fought in both Caribbean and Pacific and turning on America's superior naval strength, this short but decisive war had momentous consequences internationally. It ended Spain's imperial power, and the US emerged for the first time as an active force in world affairs, acquiring -- amidst much domestic controversy -- an empire of her own in the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Cuba (whose struggle against Spain had sparked the war). Heavy with implications for twentieth-century America, the war is explored in its widest context in this engrossing and impressive study.

India under Colonial Rule: 1700-1885, by Douglas M. Peers

Between 1700 and 1885 the British became the paramount power on the Indian subcontinent, their authority extending from Sri Lankain the south to the Himalayasin the north. It was a massive empire, inspiring both pride and anxiety amongst the British, and forcing change upon and disrupting the lives of its Indian subjects.

Yet it is not simply a history of conquest and subjugation, or dominance and defeat: interaction and interdependency powerfully shaped the histories of all involved. The end result was a hybrid empire. India may have become by 1885 the jewel in the British crown, but by that same year a series of changes had occurred within Indian society that would set the foundations for the modern states of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. This book provides a concise introduction to these dramatic changes.

informative, insightful, full of primary sources
By snowbat
This book was accessible to someone like me who is still a neophyte in the history of India, but still insightful and interesting enough to build on what I had learned from other sources. Plus, after his analysis section, he includes a lovely appendix of carefully curated snippets of primary sources. I strongly recommend this slim volume as a quick introduction to pre-Raj-era Colonial India.
