Why did the Soviet economic system fall apart? Did the economy simply overreach itself through military spending? Was it the centrally-planned character of Soviet socialism that was at fault? Or did a potentially viable mechanism come apart in Gorbachev's clumsy hands? Does its failure mean that true socialism is never economically viable? The economic dimension is at the very heart of the Russian story in the twentieth century. Economic issues were the cornerstone of soviet ideology and the soviet system, and economic issues brought the whole system crashing down in 1989-91. This book is a record of what happened, and it is also an analysis of the failure of Soviet economics as a concept.

"lucid and compelling study." European History Quarterly
From the Back Cover
The Cold War was not solely about weapons and military threats; it was also a contest of economic strength. In the 1950's and 1960's many believed, in both East and West, that the Soviet Union presented a serious economic challenge to the capitalist West. We all know now that the economic challenge failed. But how and why did it fail?
The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Economy
draws on personal experience and literary sources, including memoirs, as well as available economic data and analyses, to illustrate the reality of everyday life and of economic policy making in the post-war Soviet Union. The author argues that the Soviet economic system was capable of producing economic growth, and did for most of its existence exhibit growth. But it revealed over a time a key weakness compared with capitalism: a systemic inability to cope well with technological change, which doomed the Soviet economy in the long-run. Moreover, 'success' in partially liberalising Soviet society, so that terror receded into the background, reduced the effectiveness of a top-downeconomic system that relied on authority and obedience.
Combining skilful economic, political and social analysis, The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Economy provides a fascinating insight into the decline of the Soviet Union.

Interesting if this is your area
By Crayton Caswell
I've been studying economic history for a few years now, and there simply aren't enough economy-focused books out there about socialism to give serious study to. I think it's a shame, and I plan on writing something within that niche eventually.
Trying to cover the economic trends of the entire Soviet Union is basically impossible, because the systems in the various Eastern Bloc countries were so different. Hungary and Yugoslavia, for example, had systems with a stronger market basis than Russia did. The author here concentrates on Russia.
That said, the book is still very broad scope, and only in a minimal fashion does it delve into personal lives or individual views within the system. Still, it's engagingly written and well thought-out. The basic information about the structure of the system, and the changes it went through as different leaders rose to power, is comprehensive and easy to understand, even if you don't have a long background in economics. Some of the information is, as a matter of human interest, just fascinating to read. If you're interested in this period and subject, then this book should be one of the 'foundation' books that gives you a basis on how things worked. Hopefully, more in this field will be written soon.

Really interesting analysis of command economy of the USSR, with all its flaws and limitations.
By Bayard B.
Very good analysis of the origin, decline, and fate of the command economy of the USSR. Lots of statistical data and interpretation. There is almost no analysis of the effects of the massive military spending on the overall economy that occurred during the 1960s and 1970s. The author's clear contention is that even ignoring the effects of military spending, the Soviet economy had serious built - in flaws and limitations. There is some hint and discussion of the likely apathy of the Soviet work force resulting from the Terror of the 1930s and 1940s and the overall poor standard of living for most of the populace afterwards in the 1970s and 1980s. Well worth reading.
