Great for a beginner in this area.

I got it when this one is on sale at $2.99.
So I did not expect much from it; however, after I browsed for a while, it turned out to be one of the great books I own.
It introduces this topic in the straightforward fashion along with good examples and make everything less difficult than supposed to be.
Note that everything in this edition is exactly the same as the hardcover one costing more than $100.

Revised review
Random vibration composed of two things: Statistics and Vibrations. To understand well in the subject, it is necessary to have strong in Statistics. This book doesn't help much for this part so you'd better begin with some other basic statistical textbooks like Hsu's.

Unlike deterministic vibration, the random vibration problems are impossibly solved in time domain. Most of time, it is necessary to do the frequency analysis. This book will force you into this area a little early. I think it's better to practice the problems a little more. Then the book will bring you from Analog to Digital that requires the deep understanding of how to approximate the continuous functions to the discrete functions. It had taken me a few months to make some senses of random vibrations in the real applications.

I would say the topic is tough but don't be too discouraged. It is understandable.

If you are going to learn computer vision and you come from CS background you may not have a good enough mathematical knowledge in signal processing. This book is a easy to read material witch will give you the basic knowledge you should have to master computer vision and other related signal processing branches.
It uses intuitive proofs and explanations so if you are looking for a very abstract and deep book on signal processing you should not purchase this book.
Great for engineers and professionals, too basic for mathematicians.

A Brief but Thorough Treatment of the Medieval Mendicant Orders

C.H. Lawrence's book THE FRIARS is a good summary of the Mendicant orders who emerged in the late 12th. and 13th. centuries. The book explains why the men and women in the newer Catholic orders emerged from the closter to evagelize and minister to the secular world. Given the contrributions of the Frairs, good historians have expressed their respect to these men and women who emerged from the relisous houses of the Friars work among what they considered their secular brethren regardless if these people were wealthy or not.

Mr. Lawrence records the economic and social changes the occured in Western Eruope starting c. 1050. These changes led to population increases, a gradual increase in prossperity, and a need for religious appeal. This appeal led to the rise of the Mendicant orders who administered to the their secular constituents who thought they were abandoned by the cloistered monks and nuns. The new middle class were dismayed by the the secular clergy including the parish priests who were often poorly educated and incapable to offereng intelligent responses to better educated laity.

St. Francis of Assisi(c. 1182-1226) started the Friars Minor (The Little Brothers) or Franciscans as a charity order. His brothers and sisters did considerable work among the destitute and ill. These Franciscans supervised orphaneges, hospitals, etc. They catered to the hopeless, and they attracted followers not only in Italy but also throughout Europe. The Franciscan men even offered themselves as prisoners of Moslem leaders in exchange for other Catholic prisoners of war.

On the other hand St. Dominic (c.1170-1221) started The Order of Preachers (OPs) or Dominicans as a missionary and teaching order. The Dominicans stressed learning, scholarship, and preaching as an antidote to the Albigensians in Southerm France and Northern Spain. St. Dominic wanted his Dominicans to be learned to gain the respect of laymen and to counter the arguements of heretics. Lawrence gives the Dominicans for their success as both preachers and effective teachers. Devout Catholics should note that St. Dominic is credited with initiating The Rosary and the prayers that are attached to it.

C.H. Lawrence gives lesser known Mendicants credit. For example his book has sections on The Carmelites, The Austin Friars, The Crutched Friars, The Mathurin Frairs, etc. These orders have survived into the 21st. century.

Readers should note that the Me4ndicant orders thrived in urban areas as part of the Medieval economic revival. The Friars knew that many of the indigent and emerging educated middle classes could be approached in the cities while the rural areas were considered "safe" from heresy. The Friars were also atrracted to the universities since their priests and nuns could be educated in the urban schools. This often caused conflict which threatened the status of the Friars who were probably too tough to disappear.

The friars also had crises of conscience with both the Church authorities and the secular authorties. The popes and bishops had no conflict with the desire and enthyusiasm with the friars. However, there were examples of religious frenzy that threatened law-and-order. For example, there were Franciscans called the Zelanti whose religous fanaticism called contracts, social norms, etc. into question. To maintain law-and-order and to avoid chaos, Church authorites were compelled to move against them using both reconciliation and prosectuon ato protect the status quo.

The Friars made significant contributions in the Medieval universities. The secular clergy used university teaching as a career step to enter positions of the Catholic hierarchy such as bishop, archbishop, cardinal. These secular teachers did not stay at the universities, and the frairs filled these positions as careers rather than as "steps on the corporate ladder." The Dominicans were first to get entrenched in the Medieval universities, but the Franciscans were quick to follow. While the secular clergy complained about this, the Medieval popes were quick to protect the friars academic status. One can appreciate and understand the brilliant career of scholastics such as St. Albertus, Magnus, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Bonaveture,etc. if they are aware that that the frairs took teaching more seriously than their secular counterparts. St. Thomas Aquinas did much of philosophical work at the Unversity of Paris, the University of Naples, etc.

Mr. Lawrence includes chapters of the friars on behalf of Medieval monarchs and popes. The Mendicants often offered their loyalty especially to the Catholic Church authorities and were in their service. Medieval monarchs were not slow to appreciate the friars learning and ability and followed suit. Louis IX (1226-1270) especially fond of St. Thomas Aquinas which Mr. Lawrence emphasizes.

C.H. Lawrence's THE FRIARS is a good precis of the Medieval friars. He gives a clearly written account of their achievements and shortcomings. Mr. Lawrence has a good bibliography to attract further reading. Anyone who wants to know the origins of the university as well as the changes in the Medieval Catholic Church would appreciate this book.

Scholarly yet readable, sympathetic yet not uncritical, Lawrence's book provides a concise account not only of the early history of the Friars (Franciscans, Dominicans etc.) but of the history of the western church in the thirteenth century (including the church's missions to such distant places as Beijing). An excellent textbook for students, and an enjoyable read for anyone interested in history.

This book deals with the origins of the Franciscan, Dominican, Augustinian, and Carmelite friars (along with other minor mendicant orders)
and the foundations of mendicancy. It is a great source of information for investigating the current trends in the church at large in the 12th-14th centuries.

slow but ok

I had to read this book for a school project. It's a good, thorough biography but it is a VERY SLOW READ!!! I wouldn't start reading this unless you had a lot of time on your hands. It took me around a week to read it, and I read pretty fast. The author examines Gandhi's life in depth, with a TON of detail. All in all, it's a great biography, but somewhat boring if you're not interested in what Gandhi was really like.

excellent extended introduction to ten exemplary essays

The long and admirable 70 page introduction outlines the postcolonial field of studies in as succinct and lucid a manner as possible taking special care to note that in this field there is no such thing as consensus. The fields most marked characteristic is perhaps its diversity which is not too surprising given the wide scope of historic, cultural and psychic circumstance now under its scrutiny. Excellent summaries of the primary figures in the field as well as an awareness of the provisionality of any self-definition (of both the field of study and the political reality), for as postcolonial theories evolve so do the definitions of the postcolonial.

You don't have to be bilingual to enjoy this book

This is a wonderful introduction into bilingualism. This book takes the reader on a journey along the exciting and controversial land of bilingual speakers, countries, researches, and case studies. It includes clear maps and graphs. It is incredible background material for students and a reference for those who have spent some time doing reaserch in any aspect of bilingualism. As you move from chapter to chapter the reading is engrossing and one does not need to interrupt it to check with Oxford English Dictionary for obfuscating words or notions. The text flows. Plus, this book provides a wonderful bibliography that is very useful for linguists, sociolinguists, researchers and students. The reading is enjoyable .

A wee bit out of date.

This was a required text for a course I took in bilingualism. I had high hopes for the book but was unfortunately disappointed at its narrow scope. And, it is horribly out of date. The first chapter, even in its newest edition, refers to Russia as USSR. There are a lot of theories of bilingualism discussed, mostly explained well enough to get the idea. But sometimes, it seems as though the author gets caught up in the explaining and forgets to get to the point. On a positive note, there are numerous examples of bilingual speech presented, many from the author's own experience. The case studies in the latter half of the book are quite interesting as well.
All in all, I would say if you're getting started in the study of bilingualism, this is an okay book to get your feet wet. Howeve, I wouldn't depend solely on this work.

They unified Spain under one government and established the new Inquisition in 1478; they affirmed the country¿s Catholic Christian identity by forcing Muslims and Jews to convert to Christianity and they sent Christopher Columbus to discover a ¿New World¿. Their influence has passed down centuries, providing political and cultural role models during the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco.

 

Powerful figures in history have generally achieved dominance as individuals, and have largely been male. This book is striking in being about a couple, not a single, dominant ruler. On the 500th anniversary of the death of Isabella, John Edwards provides a gripping and topical account of the dynamics of their power relationship and the religious controversies of their reign.

 

This is essential reading for those concerned with power, politics and religion and with interfaith relations in the premodern world.

 

John Edwards is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Fellow of the George Bell Institute, and Correspondent of the Spanish Royal Academy of History. Now a Research Fellow in Spanish at the University of Oxford, he was formerly Senior Lecturer in Medieval History and Reader in Spanish History at the University of Birmingham. He has written extensively on Spanish History, including The Spain of the Catholic Monarchs, 1474¿1520 (2000).

About the Author

John Edwards has been involved in work on Spanish history and literature for over thirty years, having published, to date, eight books and over eighty articles and conference papers in Britain, the USA, Spain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Poland and Israel.

For twenty years he has taught at the University of Birmingham, successively as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Medieval History and as Reader in Spanish History. He is also a University Research Fellow in Spanish at Oxford University.

A big disappointment

The lives of Isabella and Ferdinand were a time of great excitement, but this book somehow manages to be drab and tedious.
It fails both as an old-fashioned history book (where are the quotes, anecdotes and pictures?) and as a modern economic history (where are the graphs of Spain's rising power and sources of income?)

Ferdinand's diplomatic skill is completely overlooked. There is no map of the Canaries, America or Naples, not even a map of Columbus' voyages.

To top it off, it wasn't even *bound* competently. My copy had twelve pages out of order.

A big disappointment which I do not recommend.
