Until recently, the study of Scotland's economic and social development in the centuries before the Industrial Revolution has lagged behind research on England. Yet Scotland's story is a very remarkable one, and demands careful examination. For, starting from a much lower baseline than her larger and wealthier neighbour, Scotland underwent a major transformation in the later years covered by this book, which enabled her to industrialise alongside England in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. How was it that such a small, poor, underpopulated country on the periphery of Europe was able to claim a place in history as one of first industrial economies of the modern world? What were the conditions in early modern Scotland that made such an unlikely advance possible? After years of comparative neglect, the last two decades have seen a dramatic upsurge of new research into Scotland before the Industrial Revolution which has enriched our knowledge of these centuries, and altered our understanding of their significance for Scotland's subsequent development. These new perspectives inform Ian Whyte's survey throughout. In it, he pays due attention to the wide regional variations within Scotland itself, and to the distinctive elements of her economy and society; but he also highlights the many parallels between the Scottish experience and that of her neighbours, especially England. The result sets Scotland within both a British and a European context. For anyone studying the development of the Scottish people, this book will be necessary reading; but it has a wider value, too, for students of British economic and social history more generally, since it provides a freshperspective on a subject too often dominated by its English dimension. Since it is notably well written with a telling use of unfamiliar detail, it will also appeal to general readers interested in reaching behind the romanticised images of popular tradition to find out how the ordinary men and women - in lowland and highland, in town and country, in good times and bad - really lived and worked in pre-industrial Scotland.

This is a great introductory text. I took a single course in Indo-European Historical Linguistics back in college, and I really wanted to get more into Celtic languages. I was intimidated, however, by the bizarre (albeit magical) LOOK of a printed page covered with Welsh, Irish, Breton, or what have you. If I had known about this book, I would certainly have availed myself of it. It helps to have studied some linguistics to really get a lot from this book, but you could work your way through it with a good dictionary of linguistics terminology. One of the chief strengths of this book is the way it breaks things down so well -- the most difficult topics are laid out in bite-sized sections that are only two or three pages long. I guess the closest thing I have to a criticism is the fact that only one example each is given of the Goidelic and Britonnic languages -- Irish and Welsh, respectively. It's okay, though, they serve to get your feet wet, and then you could continue on with some other language if you felt like it. The last hundred pages or so are devoted to more general grammatical topics. Whoever reads this, let me just recommend to you that you make good use of the bibliographies at the end, especially the specialized academic journals that are mentioned. Also, there are several terrfic listservs on the internet to help with any questions you might have in Celtic philology. Just type in a few mix-and-match combinations of words like "celtic," "listserv," "old irish," "philology," "middle welsh," etc. in the search terms field on any search engine, and you'll come up with some good listervs after, say, 3 or 4 tries. It isn't that hard. Anyway, this book is great. Two thumbs up.

About the Author

Marjolein ’t Hart is head of the research department on the history of the Netherlands at the Huygens Institute (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) in The Hague and Professor History of State Formation in Global Perspective at VU University Amsterdam. She has published extensively on the early modern history of the Netherlands (in comparative perspective), including books on warfare and state formation (1993) and financial history (1997).

A fourth-hand account for the price of an original research

I rarely say such words, but DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Period. This is not a history research, but a jingoism under the mask of science. Published in a respectable series by a decent publisher, it is priced as though it were an academic study, but do not be deceived. The whole book is devoted to proclaiming how awesome the Dutch rebels were, so every chapter is full of ungrounded generalisations. The author did not do her own research but copy-pasted bits from here and there, sometimes even from third-hand books (like Tallet’s or Hale’s works on war and society) which makes her book a fourth-hand account. Such a collection could be justified by an original synthesis like McNeill or Tilly became famous for, but there is nothing original here. Even the main thesis (that the war was profitable for the Dutch) does not stand and gets modified (after all, single persons prospered while the country suffered). What’s even more hilarious is how she discards recent research that is not to her liking, like works of Tracy or Drelichman and Both, without any evidence.
There is too much uncritical praise to the Dutch (like the claim that they had tolerance for every religion or nation) and too little comparison to experience of other states, which were not that much different. Parker’s book on the Spanish Army of Flanders is an example how to do it the right way.
Spanish cruelties of war get extensive coverage, while the Dutch are praised for discipline in scorched earth policy and in punishing the Southern Provinces for loyalty to the king.
The author’s understanding of warfare and strategy is very poor (especially of the impact of new fortifications; or she mistakenly says that only Dutch warfare was called then ’The School of War’, while that name was given to the Eighty Years’ War in general and adventurers flocked to study in both Armies).
But the best part is where she claims that the war was good for peasants because in the end survivors got larger land plots. Hard to argue with that kind of logic.

You might know as many words as you can count in the stars in the sky, but if you know not what phrasal verbs are, it availeth not. You would be missing out big time. These are the verbs that would enable you to tell the difference between:
Back off, buddy! He backed off on us in the last minute. & You can say something like that but you have nothing to back it UP. why "up" and not "off" here?
I love the examples supplied in the book as they are given with the foreign student in mind and they are used so simply. I love it when I see at the end of all that explanation a phrase saying "SIMILAR TO: "and it gives me the equivalent in other comparable phrasal verbs.

John Bird is an award-winning journalist with more than 25 years experience as a writer with "The United Church Observer" and "The Catholic Register", and as editor of "Anglican Magazine", "Catalyst" (Citizens for Public Justice), and the book "Nation to Nation: Aboriginal Sovereignty and the Future of Canada". Music has always been important to John, but never more so than in the past few years, after he fell in love with the ukulele and discovered the joy of making music with other people. John is a founding member of the Ontario band SwingBridge. He now lives in Iqaluit, Nunavut, with his wife, Lorraine, where he plays with The Road to Nowhere Band, sings in the Iqaluit Community Choir, and is always happy to jam with whoever will have him-including Lorraine.
