Solidly researched and well presented

Peter the Great-Profiles in Power is an informative and scholarly account of Peter the Great's life and times. While it may not be for the traditional popular audience (it's not pretty, has no pictures, and can be rather turgid and meandering at points), it provides a relatively concise account of a fascinating topic.

If you are interested at all in Russia and Peter the Great, there are of course many good books from which to start your reading. M.S. Anderson's is perhaps more involved than similar books, but it compensates for its density by being chock full of well-researched and well-presented information.

This book is interesting once you get into it.

Having had to read this book for a class, I found it quite detailed. It took a while to get started since many of the opening sentences did not flow together. It is a hard book to read but if you are interested in Russian History it is an important book to read. After the first chapter I had trouble poutting it down.

This famous series examines key themes in British, European and World history in short, succinct volumes. Works of scholarship in their own right, the books also provide a survey of current historical interpretations. Longman has now inaugurated a major programme of renewal and expansion for Seminar Studies, with many new titles and new editions in the pipeline. Existing books are being re-presented in a larger, more reader-friendly format as they reprint; and new books and new editions are being reset into an entirely new page design.

This enormously popular Seminar Study was first published in 1972 and then revised in 1986. This, the Third Edition, is sure to be greatly welcomed by a new generation of students wanting a clear and up-to-date account of the origins and development of the Labour Party, from the late nineteenth century to the general election of 1945. As ever the core of the book is supplemented by a careful selection of documents which are closely linked to the main text. An important feature of the book remains the author¿s detailed analysis of the explanations by other historians for the rise of the Labour Party. For this latest edition the author has taken the opportunity to revise and update the book in the light of the latest historiography. The bibliography has also been expanded to include the most important publications since 1986.

Dr Adelman organises his material around the two key questions facing students: firstly, why was the Labour Party formed?; and secondly, why was it able to grow? - ousting, as it did, the Liberal Party as the second party in the state in the years following the First World War, and eventually obtaining - for the first time - an overall majority at the general election of 1945. In exploring these questions the author also covers such important topics as: the development of socialist ideas, trade unionism and the General Strike of 1926, the two world wars and the impact they had on the development of the party, and the role of such key figures as Keir Hardie, Ramsay MacDonald and Arthur Henderson.

The appendix on materials evaluation should help anyone who is in a position to select the textbook which the students are going to use. "The Practice of Language Teaching" deals specifically with the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL). It is not focused especially on English as a second language (ESL) although much of the context of the book can be applied to that slightly different teaching situation. About the Author
Anthony Henderson is an Associate Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney, where he has worked since graduating in 2001 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He won the 2011 Christopher Heyde Medal of the Australian Academy of Science for his research in geometric and combinatorial aspects of representation theory and currently holds an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship. Acting as a social glue against instability and fragmentation, in periods of great transformation some of these social solidarities are eroded whilst new ones emerge. Sharon Kettering shows how nuclear family ties emerged at the expense of extended kinship ties, while traditional rural ties were eroded by a combination of demographic crisis and agricultural stagnation. Urban ties of neighbourhood, sociability and work increased with rapid urbanisation. By 1715, France had become a more peaceful and civilised place, and this book discusses some of the reasons why.

This textbook for classroom use provides a bird's eye view of social change in France during 'the long seventeenth century' from 1589 to 1715, that is, the reigns of the first three bourbon kings, Henri IV, Louis XIII and Louis XIV. It provides an originasl perspective on social change by examining changes in social solidarities, the personal bonds and loyalties acting as adhesive forces in holding society together and counteracting widespread instability and fragmentation. Solidarities included rank, honour, and reputation; family, household and kinship; faith and church; state and obedience the king; seigneurial and patron-client ties; sociability; work-related ties; and regional ties such as neighbourhood and village loyalties. Changes in solidarities included the proliferation of nuclear family ties at the expense of extendd kinship ties, while the indirect power and influence of women continued to be important. The demographic crisis and stagnation encouraged labour mobility, which with absentee landlordism helped to undermine traditional rural ties. Urban ties of neighbourhood, sociability, and work proliferated with rapid urbanisation. There was a significant transformation in the traditional role of the nobility, while a new emphasis upon loyal obedience to the king and an emerging national consciousness changed how the French saw themselves. A resurgent Catholicism sought to reform the church by imposing Tridentine orthodoxy, and eliminating Protestant heresy and Jansenist heterodoxy. Individuals on the margins of society such as beggars, vagrants, and criminals, who lacked many of the ties and solidarities characterizing the rest of society, are discussed in the last chapter. France by 1715 had become a more peaceful, civilized place in which to live, and this book discusses some of the reasons why.

Magically Delicious!

This anthology is an excellent collection of Fantastic readings. Like all anthologies choices can be questioned: "How could David Young leave this out while including that?" But there is a large enough sampling collected to give anyone interested in Magical Realism his or her fill. I would venture to say that this "one book" would satisfy a marooned bibliophile for quite some time.

My favorites are Vladimir Nabokov's THE VISIT TO THE MUSEUM and Julio Cortazar's AXOLOTL, but the rest of the canon includes other literary giants, making this a collection to return to often. It would be a great text for a grad seminar on Fantastic Literature. Highly recommended.

Exactly what I expected

The book got here within a week of my ordering it and it was in new condition. I will continue to order from Amazon because of all my great experiences with them. I highly recommend buying your school books from Amazon. Even with the shipping, the books were in better condition and cost less than the books in my school's bookstore. Wonderful introduction to magical realist fiction!

David Young was a professor of mine at Oberlin College (he is still there), and he proved that he is as sensitive an editor as he was a teacher. This book is especially illuminating in that it begins with selections that can be considered precursors to magical realist fiction. This provides a comprehensive view of the evolution of this genre, which enriches the reading of the stories included later in this volume.

Great Informative Book

This book was listed by author, Elizabeth Chadwick, as being on her research self. It is a very informative and interesting look at the life of noble women in the later Middle Ages. It is easy to read and to understand. I recommend it for those who are interested in the lives of these women who had more power and control of their lives than some may suspect; especially as widows!

Nice book that takes students through the urban design process

Nice book that takes students through the urban design process. Sometimes it is overly concentrated on the British scene, but you cannot expect generalist urban design implementation processes and tools that are, at the same time, meaningful enough. The major problem with this book is the size of the illustrations (too small) and the terrible quality of the printing (certainly one of those print-on-demand processes).
