The book begins with a general introduction, explaining why such information is important and highlighting interesting linguistic findings that emerge from the statistical analysis of the British National Corpus vocabulary. It also contains twenty four 'interest boxes' which highlight and comment on different aspects of frequency - for example, the most common colour words in English in order of frequency, and a comparison of male words (e.g. man) and female words (e.g. woman) in terms of their frequency.

This two-volume set (see Volume 1: The Gothic Tradition) by David Punter is more than simply a history of the gothic form in American and British literature. It's an ambitious attempt to redefine the word gothic so that it encompasses most of fantastic fiction and film for the past 200 years under a unifying theme: a preoccupation with fear. This is, of course, an extremely broad definition, so don't be surprised if you find yourself taking the theoretical sections of the book with a grain of salt. Also, since the book was first written in the late 1970s, much of the discussion of language and symbol relies on rather outdated Marxist and Freudian theories. Punter apologizes for the latter in the preface to this (the second) edition, saying that rather than doing a massive revision, he decided to "leave it largely as an 'unrestored' period piece, with its own characteristic style, silhouette, and mood"--while adding additional material on the contemporary gothic.

Those caveats aside, however, The Literature of Terror is mostly successful as a comprehensive study. And it's an enormously useful reference for anyone with a more than passing interest in horror literature. Plus it benefits from being the work of a single author: Punter is an extremely well-read scholar who perceives fascinating connections between a wide variety of books and films, and he explains his ideas lucidly enough that you can judge for yourself how far you agree with them.

Some of the high points are Punter's overview of what the word gothic means in other fields (such as architecture); his summaries of the roles of graveyard poetry, the sentimental novel, and the theory of the sublime in the development of the gothic concept; and his inclusion (as gothic and even horror writers) of such notables as Isak Dinesen, William S. Burroughs, Thomas Pynchon, J.G. Ballard, Angela Carter, Thomas Hawkes, and Robert Coover. If that's not enough to tempt you, the footnotes and bibliography alone offer ample yet well-chosen pointers to authors whose entertaining fiction you may not have discovered yet.

Best of all, The Literature of Terror is written in English--that is, not loaded down with annoying words such as transgressive and trope that mar so much of postmodern criticism. You can browse for information about specific authors or dip into it at your leisure without losing the thread. And for an academic work, it's darn fun to read. The Literature of Terror: the Modern Gothic is the second volume in David Punter's impressive survey of gothic writing covering over two centuries. The text was originally published in 1980 to wide acclaim and following its publication, critical interest in gothic writing has risen substantially. This long awaited second edition has been expanded to take into account the latest critical research, and is now published in two volumes.

Volume One covers the period from 1765 to the Edwardian age while Volume Two discusses modern gothic, starting with the 'decadent' gothic writing of Oscar Wilde and continuing through the twentieth century. David Punter's thorough analysis places gothic writing within its historical and sociological context. A new chapter on post-war fiction and film extends the scope of the original study, exploring the development of a contemporary 'culture of horror' and showing the continuing relevance of the Gothic as a means of expression. This new edition also contains a new chapter which analyses the relationship between cultural material and sociopathic behaviour, offering an important contribution to contemporary sociological debate.

This is the most complete book on the subject of some twenty I've read. It is also the most even-handed. It carries enough up-to-date statistics to be an almanac. The bibliography covers all of the most popular and the best books yet written, and his brief comments on them are a guide to which are worthwhile. The scholar will appreciate the thorough index. All this and it remains very readable. He covers the entire war, from the French prelude to the MIA fiasco. The book has so much history laid out in plain English, it amazed me that it was only 391 pages, including excellent maps. It is complete enough to be a text-book but it should be read by everyone who lived thru that era, veterans, protesters and bystanders.

Some things never change

Paul J. Curran rescued me from the remote sensing text chosen by my professor. I spent hours trying to understand certain principles, having no background in energy, reflectance, wave lengths, or any of the concepts necessary to understand how remote sensing works. Curran's book is direct, the index is helpful, and the diagrams make sense. With this supplement, my understanding was greatly enhanced.

Some things never change. Light and energy still do what they've always done, and no "new" information about how they act has been introduced since this book was written. There may be a few new satellites relaying information, but I was interested in the "principles."

This is a worthwhile book to add to a collection.

Terttu Nevalainen

was appointed Associate Professor at the Department of English, University of Helsinki, in 1993 and full Professor of English Philology at the same department in 1997. Her research interests include phonetics and English historical lexicology, but the new discipline she has actively developed and worked on, together with Helena Raumolin-Brunberg, over the last ten years is historical sociolinguistics.

Helena Raumolin-Brunberg, after a period as acting Associate Professor of English at the Department of Translation Studies, University of Helsinki, (1989-1992), has devoted her time to research on historical sociolinguistics.

Very Educational

This was my textbook for a STUDY OF LANDFORMS, a course I needed for my undergraduate Minor (Geography) several years ago. I was immediately impressed by the thorough coverage provided by Summerfield.
The work starts with the basics: s-waves and p-waves and a brief introduction to seismology, a look at the apparent strata of the earth from the core to the atmosphere, and an introduction to endogenic (earth-originated) - e.g. mantle plumes and the "conveyor belt" effect leading to the movement of the lithosphere on the athenosphere - and exogenic (largely solar-related) processes - e.g., wind - which provide the energy for plate tectonics and the building up & erosion of land forms. Following this the work takes a more indepth look at topics such as various forms of uplift (orogenic and epierogenic processes such as block faulting, folding and igneous-related activity) followed by individual chapters on processes relating to coastlines, deserts, glacial, permafrost & etc.
This is an excellent introduction to the earth sciences which treats the subject in a professional manner and largely eschews any indoctrination into or against ecological considerations.

Not worth your reading time

I find this book to be extremely dull and lifeless. I love studying geomorphology, but this book is almost enough to turn me away. The graphs, diagrams, and charts are overwhelming. It seems to based more on statistics then observations of how systems really work. The photos are boring and uninspirational. Reading through the text is like slowly dragging my fingernails down a chalkboard. I can barely make it through 5 pages at a time without losing complete interest. The explanations of how systems and processes work makes no sense to me. I find myself having to cross refernce this text with other geology texts from different classes. Also, many of the people that are quoted are from the 1940's and '50's. Ridiculous!! It reads like a computer assembly manual in Japanese. Granted, the text does cover a wide range of geomorphological features, it does not cover them well.

Excellent introductory text

A wide ranging, well written summary of geomorphic knowledge. This is one of the better introductions to the interesting field of geomorphology and I whole-heartedly recommend this book.
