The Wars of Louis XIV, 1667-1714, by John A. Lynn

Warfare dominated the long reign of the `Sun-king', Louis XIV. For forty years from 1672, France was continuously at war and had one of the largest armies seen in the West since the fall of imperial Rome. The campaigns secured little territory, but almost bankrupted the country and the consequences for the French monarchy were dramatic - contributing to its eventual downfall. John Lynn examines the wars for evidence of a coherent strategic policy; he explores the operational logistics of the campaigns; and considers their significance for France's diplomatic, political, mililtary, administrative and institutional

This is the first modern, comprehensive study in any language, and offers a vivid insight into 17th and 18th century statesmanship and warfare - reaching a climax with the defeat of France by Marlborough at Blenheim.

War-as-process
By R. A Forczyk
Since the wars of Louis XIV have not been covered comprehensively in English, this volume by a renowned historian is particularly welcome. In this work, John Lynn combines a succinct, but thorough blow-by-blow narrative account of the wars fought by Louis XIV with a cogent historical analysis that places these conflicts in their proper perspective. Lynn's main hypothesis differs from some other historians who view Louis XIV as a would-be European conqueror intent on endless wars of conquest. Rather, Lynn regards Louis' wars as essentially defensive after achieving limited territorial gains in Holland after 1675. Lynn explains these conflicts as wars-as-process that rather than seeking to annihilate enemy armies or achieve decisive victories, sought lesser objectives like extorting taxes from occupied lands, deciding dynastic issues or achieving defensible borders for France. Inevitably Louis XIV sought short wars against isolated opponents, but the indecisive nature of 18th Century conflict led to protracted, attritional struggles against coalitions.
The Wars of Louis XIV consists of eight chapters, beginning with a background chapter on European conflict in 1495-1661. Two other excellent opening chapters cover French strategic concepts in this period as well as the strength and methods of the French army and navy. The next two chapters cover the relatively painless War of Devolution and the Dutch War, which were fought to achieve martial Gloire for Louis after he came to the throne. At relatively low cost, Louis added to his territory and seemed to confirm the use of violence as a useful tool of statecraft. The fifth chapter covers violence and state policy, specifically the so-called "reunions" which were coercive annexations of adjacent territory similar to Hitler's "Anschluss" with Austria, and violent suppression of the Protestant minority in France. The sixth and seventh chapters - which comprise nearly half the book - cover the fateful Nine Years War and the War of the Spanish Succession. Although France did well militarily in the first conflict, it was financially exhausting to fight protracted attritional struggles against coalitions. In the last war, fought for dynastic reasons, the French did fairly well until Marlborough showed up in 1704. Marlborough changed the slow operational tempo - typically one big siege attempted per season - and sought to fight big battles. He smashed the French at Blenheim and Ramillies, and succeeded in rolling back most of Louis' gains over the past 20 years. Nevertheless, Louis outlasted his enemies and eventually managed to achieve a favorable peace. The final chapter consists of an analysis of all of Louis' wars and attempts to place them in proper historical perspective.
Overall, this work is excellent - it is well-written, well-researched and provides fresh insight into a long-neglected subject. Students of Napoleonic warfare would be well-advised to read this book as background on the development of French doctrine (particularly a preference for fortifications) and strategy in pre-Revolutionary France. The chapters that cover the wars are sub-divided into sections on each year, which are cover the different fronts sequentially. The only flaw is this volume is the lack of decent maps; many important towns mentioned in the text are not depicted in the simple sketch maps nor are the movement of armies depicted. Nor is there a map of the Spanish theater of war, which was particularly important in the last two wars. It is particularly difficult to follow gains and losses of towns in the main battle front of Flanders, and the author should have provided at least a summary map to depict major territorial changes in each war. Readers should keep a good atlas handy in order to follow the campaigns.
Although France was able to achieve some strategic gains in these wars of Louis XIV, the main military legacy of the Sun King was near financial bankruptcy. John Lynn concludes, "for fifty years, French armies had been strong enough to stand against coalitions of all the other great powers. But the treaties of Utrecht, Rastatt, and Baden marked a watershed in international relations. No longer could France maintain its former dominance. This reality reflected not only the relative decline of France, but the increased power of other European states."

Fifty Years of War
By Marco Antonio Abarca
Louis XIV engaged in nearly constant warfare from 1664 to 1714. His wars covered the face of Europe from Ireland to Italy. The great commanders of the Age, Marlborough, Vauban, Turenne, Conde, Luxembourg and Eugene all crossed the stage of Louis' many wars. This is a lot of history to compress into one volume.
John Lynn does an admirable job of surveying the different wars and keeping track of all the campaigns that shaped these wars. He writes clearly and economically. One finishes the book having a better understanding of Louis' grand strategic vision.
This is not a book for someone wanting to learn more about the great commanders of the Age or the details of specific campaigns or battles. This is a book about war, writ large.
In my opinion, the value of this book for the general reading public of military history is that it places the accomplishments of Frederick the Great and later Napoleon into a better context. To understand why they were such revolutionaries, it is important to place them in contrast to an era where war was seen as process and the decisive moment did not exist.

Very Useful
By R. Albin
This useful and concise book is a nice overview of the wars of Louis XIV. Lynn provides the basic narrative and quite a bit of astute analysis. As Lynn points out, there is not a lot of English language literature on this topic and much of it is dominated by what might be termed Marlborougholatry. In a series of well written chapters, Lynn provides the basic background in French and general European history, the fundamentally personal-dynastic considerations underlying much of these conflicts, an excellent overview of the structure of the French war efforts, a set of narrative chapters on the wars themselves, and a well considered concluding overview attempting to place Louis' wars in larger context.

Lynn emphasizes Louis' psychology as a monarch dedicated to maintaining and expanding royal authority, and Louis' attachment to the idea of divinely sanctioned legitimate succession. The essentially dynastic motivations of much of his policy are discussed very well. The section on the organization of the French war effort, stressing the expansion of royal power and administration is a digest of one of Lynn's prior books and is simply excellent. This shows both the great expansion and vigor of Louis' rule, and in the discussion of its financial limitations, its marked weakness. Lynn's discussion of the structure of the French Army and Navy, and the nature of warfare in this period is similarly excellent.

The narrative chapters are solid, concise overviews of Louis' major wars. These are generally well done but rather dense because of the necessity of packing so much into a series of relatively short chapters. More maps and exposition would have improved these chapters. Lynn has a basic distinction between Louis' early wars which were devoted to establishing France as a particularly powerful state within the European state system, and his later wars, which Lynn argues were largely efforts to consolidate and defend the results of the earlier wars. In a modest bit of revision, Lynn argues that the later wars - The War of the League of Augsburg and the War of the Spanish Succession - were essentially defensive on Louis' part, though Louis' arrogance and miscalculations led to protracted, general European wars. Lynn is essentially trying to correct a view that sees Louis as some precursor version of Napoleon, which is probably correct, but he probably goes too far in defending Louis. The cumulative effect of narrative chapters provides an excellent illustration of the relatively inconclusive nature of war per se in this period and leads Lynn to finish with some interesting analysis of war as a general phenomenon in modern European history.

Mussolini, by Martin Clark

Benito Mussolini was a brilliant Socialist journalist who in 1914 declared war, put himself at the head if the anti-Socialist movement in Italy, manoeuvred himself into power by 1933 and ruled the country until overthrown in 1943. He was a dynamic but insecure personality, who appeared dictatorial but always had to share power with the military and bureaucratic establishment.  Mussolini founded an Empire in Africa and tried to 'make Italians' in his own heroic, war like image, but in fact failed to even control his own family!  In June 1940, when France fell, he could not resist joining in the Second World War on the German side, although Italy was not equipped for serious fighting. His rule ended in Military disaster and personal humiliation.

This new biography focuses both on Mussolini's personality and on the way he exercised power, and regards these two issues as closely linked.  It sees him as a man with all the talents needed to attain power but few of those needed to exercise it well. This book primarily focuses on how Mussolini had absolutely the wrong personality for a successful political leader.

Review

'...a highly readable account, packed with information, full of references to present-day politics and with a fair number of light-hearted asides to the reader. Clark is a master of the moderating synthesis and has no place for moral outrage.'

"Paul Corner, Journal of Modern Italian Studies 2006"

From the Back Cover

Mussolini is remembered as one of the two most important Fascist dictators of the twentieth century. He seized power in Italy in 1922 and ruled the country until overthrown in 1943. But his rule ended in military disaster and personal humiliation, and he was executed by anti-Fascist partisans in 1945.

This readable and witty biography focuses both on Mussolini¿s personality and on the way he exercised power, and regards these two issues as closely linked.  It:

  • Considers him as a man with all the talents needed to attain power but few of those needed to exercise it well in the long run.  Indeed, he had absolutely the wrong personality for a successful political (and a fortiori military) leader. He was a dynamic but insecure man, who appeared dictatorial but always had to share power with the military and bureaucratic Establishment, and greatly resented the fact.
  • Reflects on the nature of government and on how things work in modern societies, and on how far politics and individuals make a difference.
  • Argues that Mussolini¿s appeal rested on embodying robust masculine virtues ¿ courage, responsibility, patriotism ¿ that are now distinctly old-fashioned, but still have very widespread support.  That is why his admirers still regard him as the ¿Last Man in Europe¿

On the 60th anniversary of Mussolini¿s death, Martin Clark¿s portrayal of the Fascist dictator¿s leadership bears a striking resemblance to the rule of contemporary politicians, obsessed by media spin and short-term triumphs at home and abroad. Clark argues that Mussolini pioneered a ¿mediacracy¿ ¿ rule by journalists attempting to ensure that all social institutions, and even the private sphere, conform to government dictates. The Fascist stress on political correctness may have been quite different in subject-matter from today¿s, but was similar in its attempts to make certain extremely common things unsayable and even unthinkable.

Martin Clark is former Reader in Politics at the University of Edinburgh. He is author of many books on Italian history, including Longman titles Modern Italy 1871-1995 and The Italian Risorgimento.

Good bio
By J. Friday
This is mainly a political economic look at Fascist Italy. It isn't much of a bio of Mussolini because he was a workaholic who didn't lead much of an interesting life away from work. He went to bed late, rose early, and lived his life around work. That's why all Mussolini bios are basically bios of Fascist Italy. A lot of these world leaders weren't interesting people away from their jobs. So if you expect mainly a bio, you're in for a disappointment. However, Mussolini did have interesting quirks (he didn't even wait to get his mistresses into bed; he had sex with them on the stairs and then dismissed them so he could go to bed alone) and opinions (he believed Italy wasn't destined to be a world leader no matter how hard the Italians tried).

Still, this is a good book for political scientists, economists, and historians. I gave it four stars because it wasn't objective in any way. It was extremely subjective. Yet it has new detail other historical books on Fascist Italy don't. Its not good for the casual reader. It's good for someone interested in Fascist Italy and is willing to analyze in order to understand it.

Woodrow Wilson, by John A. Thompson

Most famous in Europe for his efforts to establish the League of Nations under US leadership at the end of the First World War, Woodrow Wilson stands as one of America’s most influential and visionary presidents. A Democrat who pursued progressive domestic policies during his first term in office, he despised European colonialism and believed that the recipe for world peace was the self-determination of all peoples, particularly those under the yoke of the vast Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires.  His efforts to resist heavy reparations on Germany fell on deaf ears, while the refusal of France, Russia and Britain to accept a League of Nations led by America, together with the US Senate’s refusal to ratify the League, led to its ultimate failure.

Woodrow Wilson has traditionally been seen by both admirers and critics as an idealist and a heroic martyr to the cause of internationalism. But John Thompson takes a different view, arguing that  Wilson was a pragmatist, whose foreign policy was flexible and responsive to pressures and events.  His conclusion, that Wilson was in fact an exceptionally skilful politician, who succeeded in maintaining national unity whilst leading America onto the world stage for the first time in its history, offers a challenging interpretation for anyone interested in the man and his era.

Review

'This is a book that, while being accessible to studnets, will be stimulating to scholars.  It is a valuable contribution to Wilsonian scholarship.'

The Journal of Southern History, Feb 2004

From the Back Cover

As President of the United States, 1913-21, Woodrow Wilson directed American foreign policy during the First World War, leading the United States into the conflict in 1917 and playing a major role at the Paris peace conference. He is one of the most significant figures of twentieth century history.

This profile, which is based upon the recently-completed publication of the Wilson Papers, presents a fresh view of his career. It provides an integrated interpretation of his academic career as a political scientist and university president, his style as a domestic politician and his conduct of foreign policy - topics that have generally been treated separately and very differently. It shows that, from an early age, Wilson's chief interest was in the nature of political leadership in a democracy, and describes the great success he enjoyed when he had an opportunity to practice this role himself. Although his ultimate failure to persuade the Senate to accept the League of Nations has left a misleading impression that Wilson was an unrealistic visionary, it took great political skill to lead a largely united country into its first major attempt to shape the world beyond the Western Hemisphere. Thompson¿s book presents an alternative, more rounded and ultimately more positive portrait of this major President, showing that he was a very able and pragmatic politician.

John S. Thompson is Fellow of St Catharine¿s College, Cambridge. He is the author of `Reformers and War:American Progressive Publicists and the First World War¿ (1987).

A Man Ahead of His Time
By JMack
Few figures in American history have as polarizing effect on people as Thomas Woodrow Wilson. While he accomplished a great deal during his term, his legacy is haunted by a glaring failure. John A. Thompson takes a concise, yet surprisingly thorough look at the political career of the 28th President of the United States in the Profiles in Power Series.

Woodrow Wilson seemed to be an unlikely candidate to one day become president. As the son of a presbyterian minister, he often placed his faith ahead to political feasibility. After serving as the president of Princeton, his progressive ideals led to his election as governor of New Jersey. His popularity led to his nomination as the democratic candidate for president in a year when the republican electorate was split between Theodore Roosevelt and William H. Taft.

Among his accomplishments as president were the Child Labor Act, the Federal Reserve Act, and the Federal Trade Commission Act. Wilson is also commended for his role as a leader during World War I. While various factions including former President Teddy Roosevelt called for American involvement in the war, Wilson exhausted every possible means for peaceful resolution. Supporting by George Washington's farewell address statement to avoid European entanglements, Wilson pressed forward in negotiations. Only when Germany refused to discontinue attacks on merchant ships was Wilson's hand forced into war.

After the allied victory, Wilson became a key figure in establishing the peace in Europe. Wilson was the first president to travel to Europe during his term in office. It was during his work in Europe that he attempted to implement the League of Nations. Wilson was humbled in the eyes of the Europeans that exhaulted him when the U.S. senate refused to ratify American membership. In a show of partisanism that was uncharacteristic in its time, republican senators refused to accept the League of Nations as it was.

Wilson is one of the key figures in American history, whose only major failure was a project so ambitious that many considered it utopian. His interests were not political but universal and international ideals. World War II was among the problems foresaw and could have prevented. I was certainly enlighted as to the facts of the Wilson administration through this book. While there are certain omission such as much of Wilson's youth, the book is recommended to those seeking to expand their knowledge of Woodrow Wilson.

Undoubtedly the best short life of Woodrow Wilson in print
By A Customer
It may come as a surprise to many American readers that it has fallen to a British scholar (from the prestigious University of Cambridge) to write such a lively, elegant and thoughtful study of one of America's greatest Presidents. But those who have followed Thompson's earlier work on Progressivism will know what a fine writer he is.
Here he follows Wilson's career through all the highs and lows of political life, deftly sketching a powerful pen-portrait of Woodrow Wilson the tortured man even as he skilfully demonstrates just why Wilson was such a pivotal figure in American political history. The writing is crisp, the pacing never flags, and Thompson's conclusions are both striking and convincing. A powerful read, and in the current climate, perhaps an instructive one. Buy it, read it, and send a copy to the White House.

Woodrow Wilson and World War I
By David Liano
In Woodrow Wilson: Profiles in Power, John Thompson presents an objective view of President Wilson's conduct as president of Princeton, governor of New Jersey, and then as President of the United States. But Thompson's primary historical questions are why President Wilson acted as he did in response to the horrors of World War I and to German submarine warfare, and then in response to the conflict with the United States Senate over the League of Nations. He dedicates much of his first chapter, "Images of Wilson," to a historiography of these queries that is organized around the disposition of the various authors. For instance, previous analyses have approached the study of President Wilson's actions from a Christian view while others from the background of European genteelism. In any case, Thompson successfully answers his historical questions by thoroughly examining the direct words and actions of President Wilson, and by convincingly discounting alternate solutions.

Thompson discusses President Wilson's early years in office as the country's president that showcases the President's support of progressivism. However, the main focus of the book seems to be around President Wilson's desire to use his position to resolve the conflict in Europe and to spread what he felt was the superior humanity of the United States. President Wilson's confidence in American morality is exhibited in many quotes cited by Thompson including the following: "the peace of the world must henceforth depend upon a new and more wholesome diplomacy (p 125)."

A predominant predicament faced by President Wilson in the early years of World War was between his adherence to the wishes of American who favored non-involvement and his obligation to protect the honor of his country. At the same time, Thompson suggests that President Wilson had a strong desire to help create a better and safer world. This desire seemed to come from his obligation as President of the United States and from his own convictions. This ties into the President's ultimate response to the continuous harassment caused by the German U-boats in the shipping lanes around Great Britain. Thompson often shows how President Wilson had wanted to be part of the peace process in Europe. The President finally realized that the United States could not have legitimacy in the negotiations of a peace agreement without backing his stern words to Germany about continued U-boat attacks, especially on American vessels. As Thompson also shows, the President had already realized that the United States could only meet its moral obligation "through an active foreign policy (p 250)."

Regarding President Wilson's postwar fight with the United States Senate over the League of Nations, Thompson shows a President that acted less rational and with less pragmatism. First, the President neglected Republican participation in the peace process in Paris. Secondly, he became very self-righteous over his preferred terms of the peace treaty and this caused him to be very inflexible and probably unreasonable.

A final highlight of Thompson's book is the well-detailed description of the U-boat attacks and a chronology of these attacks and President Wilson's subsequent responses. Thompson makes it very easy to make a comprehensive time line of these attacks and how they help to evolve the President's and America's attitude towards Germany.

History of Urban Form: A seminal work.
By GS Steyn
This book is seminal and contains a wealth of information. The 3rd edition is, however, severely fragmented with Islamic cities addressed in two unrelated chapters and Japanese and Chinese urbanism as annexures! captions and references are in a very small font, as are some illustrations, making them irritatingly difficult to read. But for an overview of pre-industrial urbanism ... a must buy!

The Birth of a Great Power System, 1740-1815, by Hamish Scott

The Birth of a Great Power System, 1740-1815 examines a key development in modern European history: the origins and emergence of a competitive state system.

H.M. Scott demonstrates how the well-known and dramatic events of these decades - the emergence of Russia and Prussia; the three partitions of Poland; the continuing retreat of the Ottoman Empire; the unprecedented territorial expansion of Revolutionary and Napoleonic France, halted by the final defeat of Napoleon - were part of a wider process that created the modern great power system, dominated by Europe's five leading states.

Enhanced by maps and a chronology of principal events, this comprehensive and accessible textbook is fully up-to-date in its coverage of recent scholarship. Unlike many other treatments of this period, Scott extends his beyond the French Revolution of 1789 in order to demonstrate how events both before and after this great upheaval merged to produce the central political development in modern European history.

This book addresses the crucial phase in the emergence of the modern international system which, with the subsequent addition of the USA, Japan and Russia, has prevailed until the present day.

The Place of Geography, by Tim Unwin

The Place of Geography is designed to provide a readable and yet challenging account of the emergence of gepgraphy as an academic discipline. It has three particular aims: it seeks to trace the development of geography back to its formal roots in classical antiquity; provides an interpretation of the changes that have taken place in geographical practice within the context of Jurgen Haberma's critical theory; and thirdly, describes how the increasing separation of geography into physical and human parts has been detrimental to our understanding of critical issues concerning the relationship between people and environment.

From the Back Cover

"The Place of Geography" is designed to provide a readable and yet challenging account of the emergence of gepgraphy as an academic discipline.

About the Author
Timothy Unwin is Professor of French Language and Literature at the University of Bristol.

A history of geographic thought
By A Customer
This book is an excellent summary of the history of Geography, its roots in classical thought, its development during the middle ages, and it's emergence as a discipline during the 1800's. It provides a social context in which to understand the emergence of the discipline and makes a plea for theory. A useful book for undergraduates, or students new to Geography who would like an overview. Some students couldn't care less, but some thrive on theory and the history of the displine, because it allows them an opportunity to see where they themselves fit.
I had previously read Unwin's geographical history of the Wine trade while writing a report on the wine industry, and enjoyed it immensly, so encountering a text book written by him for my History of Geographic Thought paper was reassuring. The book is organised in classic report style, with chapter and sub chapter headings. One of the priceless aspects of this book is Unwin's explanation of the role of contemporary Geography as a subject taught in secondary schools in America, Canada, England and Wales. As a subject at high school level, Geography is often marginalised in favour of History, leaving Geography without the profile that would attract graduates to students to persue study in the discipline at a higher level. Unwin outlines this problem and other crisis' that Geography has faced in recent years, including the effect that the turbulent middle decades of the 20th century had on Geographers: the way their inability to predict the events that occurred in the '60's and '70's shook their confidence in their research methods and approach to the discipline.
My favourite chapter is that on 'Geography and historical-hermeneutic science' and his focus on existentialism and phenomenology, because the Geographers that I enjoy best have drawn from these philosophies. Unwin helped me discover them, and gave me a historical-philosophical context in which to understand where the ideas came from and how they are relevant. It helped me chape my own ideas. A fascinating read, providing food for thought for Geographers or thinkers of every kind. scentific, hemeneutic and critical.

Free Composition (Der freie Satz) v. 3, by Heinrich Schenker

The first two volumes of Heinrich Schenker's masterwork Neue Musikalische Theorien und Phantasien, Harmonielehren (1906), and Kontrapunkt (1910 and 1922), laid the foundations for the harmonic aspect of his theory. The specific voice-leading component was a later development, progressing with brilliance over the last 15 years of his life. It is in Free Composition (Freie Satz, 1935) that the idea of voice-leading receives its most detailed and precise formulation.
Pendragon Press is honored to make this distinguished reprint available once again, with a new preface by Carl Schacter.

One of the most important books on the theory of tonal music ever written
By Craig Matteson
Free Composition was the third in Heinrich Schenker's (1868-1935) series "New Musical Theories and Fantasies". The two preceding it were "Harmony" (1906) and "Counterpoint" (volume I in 1910 and volume II in 1922). While every undergraduate student in music has taken courses on harmony and counterpoint, Schenker's views are not designed as pedagogical tools to teach the rudiments of musical grammar. Yes, they do cover some of the same ground, but Schenker was always after a deeper interpretation of the composition and revealing the composer's art than as something merely to be explained, generally applied, and played with only surface facility.

Unfortunately, Schenker died before this, his most profound work, was fully prepared and published. The first German edition was hastily put together and published hastily. Oswald Jonas corrected, added notes and edited its second edition in 1955. The present English edition and translation was done by Ernst Oster and was published in 1979 to much justified acclaim by Longman (with assistance from the American Musicological Society). Oster added many clarifying notes, and created an English version that is even clearer than the original German. Schenker's writing, after all, can be cryptic, inconsistent, and obscure. Carl Schachter said in his 1981 review of this edition that he suspected "that German readers who are fluent in English will consult `Free Composition', partly because of its excellent notes but also because, as Allen Forte remarks in his Introduction, The English version is often clearer than the original." Unfortunately, Oster died in 1977 and John Rothgeb prepared the manuscript for its actual publication.

This reprint is offered printed by Pendragon Press. It is important to remember that there are TWO volumes to this work. The first contains the text and the second has the musical examples. Buy both.

What does Schenker say in this book? It is his most penetrating look at aspects of the ways in which masterworks not only use the superstructure of the "fundamental line" as background, but have motivic connections between the various levels of middleground and foreground (the last of which is the surface of the music). No, this isn't a scientific or mechanical process that a technician could use to crank out music analyses. It is a way of expressing one's interpretation of the composition and sharing what you hear with others. Schenker's views have often caused controversy. His own prickly, elitist, nationalistic, and sometimes insulting prose has not helped his cause. However, there are many wonderful musical scholars that have found great insight through these methods and their usefulness is too great to ignore.

Some have been accused of turning every ink stain by Schenker into musical scripture, but that goes much too far. Others have adopted a style of analytical notation that appears to look like Schenker's, but without any formal connection to the theorist's usage or thought. This is a bad thing. How do you avoid becoming an unthinking acolyte or a blithering scribbler? By careful study of Schenker's writings including "Harmony" and "Counterpoint". You don't start with this book all by itself. This assumes that the reader has a good idea of Schenker's views on counterpoint, voice leading, and the role of harmony and in the "composing-out" process.
The musical examples are not like the complete analyses you will find in "Five Graphic Analyses", but are provided as specific examples to illustrate a point Schenker is making when discussing levels in composition. I think this book is a great treasure and I commend it to anyone who loves music enough to want to dig into it at deeper level. The rewards you reap will be great. It will take real effort, time, and seeking out a good teacher to answer your questions, but it will be worth it.

Here is the volume of musical examples you also need with this book of text:

Where is the second volume?
By Timothy E Jones
Originally published in two volumes, this is a translation of Volume I, which contains all the text. All of the musical examples and graphical analyses (without which, Volume I is of little use) are in Volume II. Volume II is in print and available from the publisher, but does not seem to be listed here.

A History of English Phonology (Longman Linguistics Library), by Charles Jones

This is an attempt to view historical phonological change as an ongoing, recurrent process. The author sees like events occurring at all periods, a phenomenon which he considers is disguised by too great a reliance upon certain characteristics of the scholarly tradition. Thus he argues that those innovations arrived at by speakers of the English language many years ago are not in principle unlike those that can be seen to be happening today. Phonological mutations are, on the whole, not to be regarded as unique, novel, once only events. Speakers appear to present to speech sound materials, a limited set of evaluative and decoding perceptions, together with what would seem to be a finite number of innovation producing stratagems in response to their interpretation. It is stressed that this interpretation may itself be a direct product of the kinds of data selected for presentation in traditional handbooks and Jones notes the fact that phonological change is often "messy" and responsive to a highly tuned ability to perceive fine phonetic detail of a type which, by definition, rarely has the opportunity to surface in historical data sources.
