Has global historical writing and scholarship undergone a process of westernisation over the last two and a half centuries?
How far have historians of other cultures built on their own traditions to adapt, and at times resist, western influences outright?
This is the first text on historiography to adopt a comparative, global perspective on the topic, looking not just at developments in the West but at the other great historiographical traditions in Asia and the Middle East, and at more localised historiographical developments elsewhere in the non-Western world, from Latin America to Sub-Saharan Africa.
Beginning in the late eighteenth century it examines the various kinds of historical thinking and writing which pre-dated western influence, the impact of western ideas of history as these began to be exported through trade and empire, and the rise of professional and 'scientific' history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The authors argue that what happened here was not a simple process of assimilation, but of adaptation into long standing intellectual and cultural traditions, often in the service of specific ideological concerns, for instance that of nationalism. Finally the book turns to the twin challenges to the western historical paradigms of 'objectivity' and 'progress' mounted by postmodernism and post-colonialism, critically examining the extent to which these might undermine the commitment of the historian to an honest and truthful representation of the past.
Georg Iggers is a distinguished professor emeritus at University at Buffalo (State University of New York). From 1995 - 2000 he was president of the International Commission for the History and Theory of Historiography. Having fled the Nazis as a child, he has been active in the Civil Rights movement in the US.
Q. Edward Wang is professor of the History Department at Rowan University in Glassboro New Jersey and secretary general of the International Commission for the History and Theory of Historiography.
Supriya Mukherjee teaches at the University of Memphis.
About the Author

I found it boring

Had to read this for a MA world history class - found it incredibly boring. If you are really into history, a history professor, or something on that level, I'm sure you'll enjoy it far more than I did - but It was too boring for me to enjoy. Once I'm done with class I'm going to sell it.

A pioneering work

I bought this book not long after it was published, and finished reading it not long after I bought it - it must have been 2009. While it was some time ago for me, I do recall it was one of very few academic works that I found interesting enough to finish reading cover-to-cover within weeks.
What motivates me to write this review is the May-2012 one-star review, with which I disagree. The prior reviewer clearly came to this book with a certain set of expectations that this book did not meet; my experience was different. I have been interested in history of history-writing (some call the latter "historiography") for some time, but up to that point, I wasn't able to find any books that covers the topic from a truly worldwide or global perspective - the only exceptions being an encyclopedia compiled by Daniel Woolf, and an article (which I found on the internet free) written by the same author for another encyclopedia (called something like the "Encyclopedia of History of Ideas").
So when this book came out, covering the modern period from a truly global perspective, it was truly pioneering. It compiled a vast array of disparate materials into one book-length account, while trying to give some shape to the materials with some general storylines. One storyline is the creation of history as an academic discipline, starting from German universities and how it spread to, and reacted upon by, the rest of the world. Another storyline is that while most history-writing sought to write the truth, many efforts ended up being biased by the political agendas / priorities of the day. These storylines did help me understand better how history has been written, from a global perspective.
This book is a pioneering work, and some of its inherent characteristics have been described by the other reviewer; yet my take is more sympathetic. The materials compiled do have an ad hoc feel to it; fundamentally, this is a book to try to describe the global diversity of how histories have been written in the past couple of centuries. And since the focus is on the diversity on a global level, the diversity within a specific tradition has not been given as much attention. My interest is in "world history" as a way of writing history (a new field within history that emerged especially since the 1990s in US) - it got covered in the last section. I clearly would not draw the conclusions that "all history written today is in the style of postmodernism, postcolonialism, or feminism," as our prior reviewer did.
The prior reviewer did make one thing clear - if one's interest is only in Western historiography, or feels that Western historiography represents the vast majority of the influence on modern historiography - there is really no point buying or reading this book.
Lastly, for those with a true interest in the discipline of global historiorgraphy: since 2008 a new undergraduate-level textbook named A Global History of History has been published by Daniel Woolf. I have bought and read that - as an undergraduate textbook it was a little dry and a little superficial, but it covers the full span of history. Again that is also a pioneering work in its own way - anyone interested in the topic should check it out. The other is the series being published by Oxford in 5 volumes (e.g. The Oxford History of Historical Writing: Volume 1: Beginnings to AD 600) - I have been tempted to buy these, but have not yet been willing to pay up $1,000 for the 5 volumes.

The authors neither love their topic nor their readers

I like to read history and I thought this book would help me understand more about how history is written today and in the past. Sadly, nothing like this is accomplished.
The writing is very uneven and extremely dry (and I don't mind reading academic literature). At times quite interesting, but often just lazy and *without passion* for the subject. There is for instance no attempt to summarise ideas in figures or tables. At times quite detailed, but often so superficial that one hardly understands a thing.
We do get a broad overview of some themes but it all feels very adhoc. We get no understanding at all of the diversity of historical writing that clearly is present in each historical epoch. If we were to believe the book, all history written today is in the style of postmodernism, postcolonialism, or feminism. This is clearly inaccurate and I would have liked a discussion of the diversity present as well as the key sources of friction among the specialists. Nothing. I would have liked a discussion of academic history versus popular history through time. Nothing. I would have liked an insightful commentary from the authors who have been around a lifetime. Nothing.

Furthermore, exactly 50% of the book deals with a non-Western context. However, these sections are there to explain how the Western ideas transferred to the Third World (and naturally try to sell the book in ditto countries). We might just as well have sections of how UK/France/German ideas diffused to Sweden, Spain, or Greece. Let's just face it, the Third World has not influenced historiography a lot. It is not justified to give the topic 50% of the page count. But if we want to be politically correct I suppose there should have been a section of history writing in the Second World (i.e. the Soviet Union and its colonies).
Comment on the other review of this book. I am not sure he fully understood my point. There is not much non-Western historiography in this book. The focus is on the spread of Western historiography to some developing countries. I would not consider this pioneering work. In fact the lead author is born in 1926. The book mentioned by the other reviewer seems much more interesting.
