Goodman thoroughly examines the various aspects of the career of John of Gaunt (Duke of Lancaster, son and father of kings, claimant to the Spanish throne). Not really a straightforward biography like Sidney Armitage-Smith's John of Gaunt (1904. 1964. reprint. o.p.), this book instead focuses on the nuts and bolts of 14th-century princely power. In the chapter on warfare, for example, Goodman details how Gaunt raised his retinue, how much common soldiers were paid, and how the pay was sometimes in arrears for years. Other sections deal with Gaunt in Iberia, Gaunt and the church, and Gaunt and the secular peerage. Also touched upon are the duke's relations with Wycliffe and Chaucer. Goodman generally has a more positive view of Gaunt than many historians have had in recent years. Recommended for large public and academic libraries.

Now the classic work on John of Gaunt

John, Duke of Lancaster, was the son of Edward III, father of Henry IV, uncle of Richard II, and himself the pretender to the throne of Castile. He was also the richest and most powerful subject in England for most of his life -- and probably the most deeply and widely hated. He was certainly the principal target of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. A key player in the Hundred Years War, he was also on close terms with John Wycliffe and Geoffrey Chaucer. John's controversial career is thus at the very heart of English society and European politics during one of the nation's most turbulent periods, and this semi-scholarly and authoritative examination of the duke's mental processes, institutional goals, and dynastic ambitions is very useful to the understanding of England on the brink of a three-generation civil war.

Informative but boring

If you are desperately seeking information about John of Gaunt, then this is one of the few sources for it. The book does have a lot of information, but it is incredibly boring to read. Not really surprising, since most of the info seems to have been gotten from account books and inventories. The majority of the book reads along the lines of "On December 6th, 1373, he was at Pontefract castle with his wife. He wore a red shirt with silver buttons. Two months later he was back at the Savoy, apparently without his wife. He wore green hose and a black tunic." (It should be noted that I just made up that passage, but by my truth, that is how it sounds.) If you have a deep interest in John of Gaunt, then I recommend this book for you.

Jennifer Ward was Senior Lecturer in Medieval History at University of London Goldsmiths College. Her books include `English Noblewomen in the Later Middle Ages¿ (1992) and `Women of the English Nobility and Gentry, 1066-1500 (1995).

a detailed history encompassing primarily the late middle ages

It has always bothered me that, until recently, 50% of humanity was largely overlooked in the broader historical narrative. I refer, of course, to women. This is (fortunately) gradually changing. Thanks to the efforts of historians like Ward, the varied and important roles women have played are receiving attention in their own right. _Women in Medieval Europe_, as the subtitle states, straddles the latter part of the high middle ages (1100 - 1350) and the late middle ages (1350 - 1500). It is a rich era of study, as Europe was undergoing tremendous political and economic change, its social structure and social roles similarly evolving. These changes - from all levels of society - are closely attended to in this outstanding history.

The first third of the book begins with Ward examining the broad scope of women's roles: their upbringing, marriage and roles within the family and household. This works well, as there are common themes to the place of women in medieval Europe regardless of social status: as children their subordinate roles relative to men was inculcated, the skill they would need to have in their later life the primary focus of thier education (be that as housemistress, laborer, or lady of the manor.) The economic importance of marriage and the independence of women within their marriage (and household) is another common theme: from the most common peasant's wife to queens, marriage was more than a love match and once married, women weilded considerable influence and power, limited largely by their place on the wider social heirarchy. A fishmonger's wife, for example, would handle the business-end of the trade, her husband concentrating primarily on (what in modern terms would be) "production." The middle third of the book examines in detail the various roles women played in work: in trade, farming and crafts, in medical care, prostitution and nursing, and among the social elites as noblewomen and queens.

The final chapters discuss women in medieval religious life- as nuns, mystics and saints, and pentitents. As in any history covering the middle ages, religion must be addressed, given its overarching importance to the culture of the time. I was less interested in this as I was in the roles and place of women in the secular world, so I didn't read it with the same close attention I gave earlier chapters, save for the concluding chapters on "Lay Beliefs and Religious Practice" and "Heresy and Witchcraft." That religious and secular institutions sought to limit the econcomic and social independence women had gained in the earlier centuries was no suprise, the methods and rationale for this, however made for fascinating (if unsettling) reading.

The only issue I have with an otherwise stellar book is the time period it addresses: I wish Ward covered the high middle ages in greater detail (the first 200 years of the high middle ages), as she primarily emphasizes the "sweet spot" after the Black Death (1348 - 1352) when so much of European society was in flux. I understand why she did so, but the depth, detail and scope of her history left me wanting more.

I highly recommend the book. For those interested in women's studies, the history of the middle ages, or simply an excellent narrative that does much to complete the historical picture, this will certainly fit the bill. I look forward to more by this scholar, hopefully something on women in the early and high middle ages (500 - 1100).

I got this book for the last class I took for my Masters Degree. I must admit it was somewhat disapointing. Most of the reading material in the book lacks enthusiasm. It was unable to grab my attention and it seemed to go on forever over-explaining things as if trying to write for the sake of writing. If you want to read on the topic there are better choices out there.

About the Author
Jennifer Holmes is Assistant Professor of Government, Politics, and Political Economy at the University of Texas, Dallas.

Janet Holmes is curator emeritus of Western Art and Culture at the Royal Ontario Museum.

Jennifer Coates, DVM, graduated with honors from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. She worked as an associate veterinarian and chief of staff in Petersburg, Virginia and now practices in Jackson, Wyoming, where she is often praised for her ability to communicate with clients and staff. Prior to graduating from veterinary school, Jennifer worked as a veterinary receptionist, assistant, and technician. It was then that she became aware of the frustrations caused by veterinary jargon. Pet owners were confused and upset by their lack of understanding. Receptionists were unable to answer client's questions. Technicians had trouble deciphering medical orders. Animal owners, veterinary support staff, and animal care workers needed a clear and concise resource to explain terminology in plain English. The skill and knowledge gained through years spent immersed in all aspects of veterinary care gave Jennifer an exceptional perspective from which to write the Dictionary of Veterinary Terms. An animal owner for most of her life, Jennifer resides in Etna, Wyoming, with her husband, daughter, dogs, cats, and horses. When she is not at work in the clinic she enjoys hiking, horseback riding, skiing and traveling.

It was exactly what I expected.

I was required to buy this for class. As a linguistics student, I found some of the connections between Politeness Theory and different types of speech interesting. This book is based on the speech patterns of those from New Zealand, so I think that it makes a big difference in comparison to the United States speech patterns. I did not like her argument style personally. It seems like she expected her readers to come to the same conclusion as she did when that might not be the case.

Enlightening

This is a detailed, scholarly, and documented history of many of the early doings of the Russian Orthodox Church, even before it was the Russian Orthodox Church. There is much information here about relations between church officials in different eras, but stops before the raskolniki schism. I would have liked to see more about the conversion of the Kievan Russ and about the power struggles between church and state. I was pleased to see an extensive history of the fortunes of the church under the Mongol Horde, which were much better than I had expected.
