About the Author

Bryan MacGregor is a Vice-Principal and the Head of the College of Physical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen. Before that, he oversaw the University’s Curriculum Reform project from its initiation to the arrival of the first students under the new curriculum. Prior to that, he was Head of the College of Arts and Social Sciences. He has held the MacRobert Chair in Land Economy since 1990. Before joining Aberdeen, he worked as a research manager for Prudential Portfolio Managers in London, for the Universities of Reading and Glasgow and for the Scottish Office Central Research Unit.

He holds degrees in mathematics (Edinburgh), environmental planning (Heriot-Watt) and land economy (Cambridge). He is professionally qualified as both a chartered surveyor and as a planner.

His main research interests are in property investment and property economics and he is the co-author of standard textbooks in both areas. His recent and current publications have been mainly on the econometric modelling of property markets, including rents, cap rates and returns. He has been editor of the Journal of Property Research since 1991.

Martin Hoesli, PhD, is Professor of real estate at the Universities of Geneva and Aberdeen and at the Kedge Business School in Bordeaux. He is the author of six books and over 90 scholarly articles in real estate. A past president of the European Real Estate Society (ERES) and a board member of the Swiss Financial Analyst Association (SFAA), he serves on the editorial board of the leading international real estate journals. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and a member of the European Public Real Estate Association (EPRA) research committee.

The book is very detailed and has lots of good info. THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THE BOOK IS THAT ITS TOPICS ARE CONCENTRATED ON EURO'S AND ENGLAND'S PRACTICES. If I would have known this, I would have not bought the book. I just don't feel like going through the hastle with [...] because the delivery of the book took forever.

In recent years the scope of eighteenth-century poetry has greatly expanded beyond the established canon of Pope, Swift, Gray, Johnson, Goldsmith, Smart and Cowper, to include women poets, labouring-class and provincial poets, and many previously unheard voices.

Fairer¿s book takes up the challenge this poses to our traditional understanding of the subject. He seeks to question some of the structures, categories, and labels that have given the age its reassuring shape in literary history. In doing so he offers a fresh and detailed look at a wide range of material. This book sets out to integrate the works of lesser known (even ¿unknown¿) poets into the bigger picture by engaging them with the established writers. It tests general assumptions by emphasising variety and the individual voice, and by placing poems in their immediate contexts. The result is an eighteenth-century poetic scene that is dynamic, full of human energies, and responsive to all the significant developments of the age.

David Fairer is Professor of Eighteenth-Century English Literature at the University of Leeds. He is the author of `The Poetry of Alexander Pope¿ (1989) and `Pope¿s Imagination¿ (1984), and co-editor of 'Eighteenth-Century Poetry: An Annotated Anthology' (Blackwell, 1999).

The phrase 'a pioneering survey' should be used advisedly in literary reviews, but it is appropriate to "English Poetry of the Eighteenth Century, 1700-1789" by David Fairer. Just when it seemed that poetry of this period might have been mapped to the point of reasonable familiarity, David Fairer presents readers of his latest book with terra incognita. With chapter headings such as "Sublimity, Nature, and God" or "The Romantic Mode, 1700-1730", the table of contents alone might inspire one to run for cover. It is an ambitious and rigorous scholarly work from the start, but one delivered with such apparent ease and critical discernment that it is a delight to read. This text is particularly strong on the aesthetics of landscape, connections between science and poetics, and the intellectual history of textual provenance. Here is yet another affirmation from David Fairer that literary scholarship can rank among life's greatest pleasures.

Dry reading, but intelligent

I used this book as a text for a history course at UC Riverside. The author unrolls his opinion eloquently in this book. Readers will gain a comprehensive history of Western Europe after WWII and its turn to social democracy. Urwin's chapters include topics of treaties, the EEC, and the dozens and dozens of economic and political arrangements; Europe is moving towards economic and political integration. Urwin would not suggest a United States of Europe, but a Union where the European members no longer swindle, cheat, war, or contest one another for supreme power. And Urwin does well showing the USA has competition to be reckoned with.

About the Author
Ama Ata Aidoo has distinguished herself as a writer and as a consultant on education and gender issues. She graduated from the English Department of the University of Ghana, Legon, where she was immediately appointed Junior Research Fellow of Advanced Creative Writing Program at Stanford University and, in the early 1980s, a Minister of Education in Ghana. While lecturing in the Department of English at the University of Cape Coast in the 1970s she was also appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council. She has travelled widely, and has been appointed Visiting Professor and Distinguished Visiting Professor to the English, Theatre, African, and African American Studies departments in a number of universities and colleges in the United States. She is the Executive Director of Mbaasem, a foundation to support African American women writers and their work. Her publications include the dramas The Dilemma of a Ghost (Longman, Harlow, 1965) and Anowa (Longman, Harlow, 1970); the short stories No Sweetness Here (Longman, Harlow, 1970); the novels Our Sister Killjoy or Reflections from a Black-Eyed Squint (Longman, Harlow, 1977 and Changes (The Women's Press, London, 1991); the poetry Someone Talking to Sometime (College Press, Harare, 1985) and An Angry letter in January and Other Poems (Dangaroo Press, Coventry, 1992); and the children's books The Eagle and the Chickens and Other Stories (Tana Press, Enugu, 1986) and Birds and Other Poems (College Press, Harare, 1987). Ama Ata Aidoo's many awards include the Nelson Mandela Prize for Poetry in 1987 for Someone Talking to Sometime and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Africa for Changes in 1992.

Although essentially a new book in its own right, Basil Davidson¿s survey of West Africa before the European colonial annexations of the mid-nineteenth century takes as its starting point his earlier book, A History of West Africa 1000-1800 (written in association with F.K. Buah and J.F.A. Ajayi), which was originally published in 1965. That was written primarily for readers in West Africa itself, and proved immensely popular, with sales totalling almost half a million copies. Now, Basil Davidson has rewritten, updated and expanded it, entirely reconceiving the eralier work specifically for readers outside Africa - to whom the richness and variety of the societies of pre-colonial West Africa are likely to be almost wholly unfamiliar.

Such readers could have no more clear or communicative a guide than Professor Davidson, who writes here with his customary warmth and vigour. He surveys the development and history of the peoples and empires of West Africa from earliest times (though the detailed treatment begins, as before, c.1000 AD) through to the mid-nineteenth century, when European colonial ambitions in Africa put a temporary end to the story.

West Africa, of course, is a vast area, covering a great range of climates and conditions (from the Sahara to the equatorial jungles of the south), and an equal range of peoples and cultures. It is not a single story that Basil Davidson has to tell, therefore, but many interlocking and overlapping stories. To that end, he provides narrative accounts of the key empires and cultures of West Africa, but sets them in their broader general context, as illuminated by the findings of both historians and anthropologists.

The text is richly provided with maps throughout, and a number of halftones bear witness to the wealth and sophistication of some of these societies.

The result is an impressive and vivid introduction to a region, and a time, still strangely neglected by the outer world. And yet it is a story than has wide resonances in that larger sphere - for West Africa was one of the key centres of the Slave Trade, and a large part of the populations of the African diaspora in the USA, the Caribbean and Latin America derive ultimately from the region. These are their roots, and this is their history. The many admirers of Basil Davidson¿s parallel volume on Modern Africa: A Social and Political History , also published by Longman (Third Edition, 1994) will not be disappointed.

BASIL DAVIDSON¿s long and varied career - as historian, author, journalist, broadcaster, and academic - has been marked throughout by his fascination with, and dedicated service to, Africa, and her peoples and history.

Good text for Intro class

I used this textbook for a pre-colonial West African class that I taught. For a quick introduction to West Africa's pre-colonial history, it is an okay book. For upper level classes like the one I taught, it is only good in combination with other text books. In my humble opinion, Michael Crowder and Ade Ajayi's History of West Africa, Volume 1 & 2 remain the best books for teaching a course in this field. Unfortunately, the books are no longer in print. Themes in West Africa's History by Emmanuel Kwaku Akyeampong is an excellent textbook to use in conjunction with Davidson's book.
