The First World War Peace Settlements, 1919-1925, by Erik Goldstein

The First World War changed the face of Europe - two empires (the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Ottoman Empire) collapsed in its wake and as a result many of the boundaries of Europe were redrawn and new states were created.   The origins of many of the international crises in the late twentieth century can be traced back to decisions taken in these critical years, Yugoslavia being the most obvious example. An understanding of the peace settlements is thus crucial for any student studying international history/international relations, which is what this book offers.
This book provides and accessible and concise introduction to this most important period of history.

From the Back Cover

The First World War peace settlements were the most complex rearrangement of the international system ever attempted. They are the starting point for many of today¿s flashpoints, as well as the origins of the current international system.

The emergence of ethnocentric states, disputed borders, arms control and international governance are just some of the issues facing the international system today that have their origins in the post First World War period. Erik Goldstein¿s The First World War Peace Settlements covers the period from the end of the First World War through to the 1925 Locarno Pact, and focuses on events which occurred at the Paris Peace Conference, where the broad outlines of the postwar order were worked out.

Areas covered include:

The dramatic leap forward of international governance The principle of war crimes trials The establishment of a Permanent Court of International Justice The creation of an International Labour Organization Arms control Written in a clear and accessible manner, the book also contains maps, a glossary, chronology and documents section to provide students with an invaluable guide to the First World War Peace Settlements and their relevance to events in international relations today. Erik Goldstein is Professor of International Relations and Chairman of the Department of International Relations at Boston University.

Provides rudimentary coverage of its topic
By Yoda
This book, primarily due to its very short length (about 92 pages of text) and the incredible complexity of its topic, only provides a rudimentary discussion of its topic. It provides short chapters on the Treaty of Versailles, the resulting new nation states, the League of Nations, the Treaty of Locarno, the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean resulting from the war, the situation in the Far East resulting from the war and the Washington Naval Agreement. All and all quite a bit, especially considering the breadth of the topic and the fact that it is only 92 pages in length. The author does a fairly good job at summing these topics up in that 92 pages. However, because of length of book and complexity of topic he basically can only touch upon the topics. Thus for someone who has little or no knowledge the book would prove of some use. However, for those with more than a rudimentary knowledge the book would add very little, if anything, to their knowledge base.

Above the 92 pages of text, there is also a 30 some page appendix that covers many of the important speeches, documents, etc. referenced in the books main text. For example, there is the full speech of Wilsons on his 14 points made to Congress, Clemenceau's views of the Versailles Treaty well after it was signed, etc. All of these are quite interesting but unfortunately take up valuable space that could have been better used to elaborate on the main topics covered in the book (i.e., extend the book's paltry 92 pages of text). For example, Wilson's speech could have been summarized in a few paragraphs instead of being printed in full.

A historiography summary of the WWI peace settlements
By Mary @ *Buried Under Romance*
This book's length intends it not to be an analysis on post-WWI peace settlements, but rather a historiography of the events that occurred, and the individual agendas of the "Big Four" - the U.S., Great Britain, France, and to an extent, Italy. The chapters are outlined with peace aims, actual settlements and German reparations, the "Spirit of Locarno," the state of the West after WWI, and a very brief conclusion on the success and failures of the peace settlements in accord with each major leader's agendas.

Essentially, this book has more breadth than depth, but it is good as an introductory book to outline the time between the end of WWI and the rise of Hitler. Good for essays on the high school level, but not much beyond.

Dense and Informative
By Aaron Oswald
The book is dense. It is a textbook, but it is only 168 pages. It is packed with event after event. Primary sources abound and it is full of detailed dating. It is lite on analysis, which is ok. That is the students' job.
