A very important book, but...

A thoroughly researched book that can best be described as a very detailed synopsis of the Italian Wars.
The authors presents major and minor players, the various factions and main interests of the belligerents. However, because of the sheer number of people involved, it is quite easy to lose track of who is who and, and where their alliegiances lie. Also, the authors have a tendency to unceremoniously introduce new characters without context, and as such the reader can be left with a somewhat confusing narrative.
Personally, I loved it, however, I`m wary of unconditionally recommending this book. When you`re writing the entire history of a very complex and somewhat unconnected series of historical events in one volume, you`re bound to make some sacrifices that will alienate a lot of readers. As such, paradoxically, a lot of readers will find this book too detailed (particularly with regards to names and battles), and a lot of readers will probably find it too shallow (particularly in terms of political analysis).
However, readers who take the book for what it is, i.e. a summary, not a history, with special interest in the era, and approach it with a certain patience, could have a very enjoyable read ahead of themselves.

The rise of infantry and the spread of gunpowder

This is a summary narrative of the so-called Italian Wars - simply because they were waged over most of Italy between 1494, when the King of France Charles VIII attempted to enforce his claim to the Kingdom of Naples, up to 1559 and the Peace of Cateau-Cambresis between the Emperor and King of Spain, Charles V and the then King of France, Henry II.
The book was started by Michael Mallet and completed by Christine Shaw after his death. As such, it goes very much together with, and is, to some extent, a continuation of, his book on medieval and Renaissance warfare in Italy and the Italian Condottiere (Mercenaries and their Masters: Warfare in Renaissance Italy) between about 1250 to 1500. Accordingly, the first five chapters of Italian Wars and then chapters 8 and 9 include a detailed and valuable narrative of the numerous campaigns that pitted the French against the Spanish Kings for supremacy in Italy and the possession of the Kingdom of Naples and the Duchy of Lombardy.
There is however much more to the book than just a narrative of events, however good it may be. What it also shows are the reasons why Italians were unable to prevent the peninsula from becoming the battle ground of the two most powerful monarchies of the time. One of these was the rivalries between the Italian players themselves while another was that none of the five main Italian powers, not even Venice which seems to have been the best organised, was large enough to field armies of the size that the two monarchies could put into the field.
The book finds much of its value in analysing how warfare was transformed during the Italian Wars. In a nutshell, armies became much larger, but also slower-moving, as both sides fielded increasing numbers of infantry. They also relied increasingly on gunpowder, both for canons and for the handguns, harquebus and then by muskets that displaced the old crossbows and were used alongside pike infantry of which the Swiss and the German Landsknecht were the mercenary prototypes.
As the book shows very well, these changes in weapons and tactics had multiple consequences on organisation, with the emergence of permanent forces, on fortifications which had to be redesigned to resist canon, and on the resources needed for waging for, of which, to cut a long story short, more were needed in all respects: more men, more weapons, more clothes, more food, more horses and pack animals and – crucially – more money. The book also shows that there was frequently never enough of the latter, with armies going unpaid for months, and often hungry.
A related implication was that the soldiers tended to “live on the country” and were billeted on the civilians, with all the excesses that can be imagined. Another implication was the high rates of attrition through diseases, especially during sieges, and desertions, especially towards the end of long campaigns and wars, when their respective employers’ treasuries were utterly exhausted.
The book also contains numerous valuable and well-discussed findings, too many in fact to mention in a review. One, for instance, is that while it is clear that the peace of 1559 saw the end of the Italian Wars and the victory of the King of Spain, this was certainly not a foregone conclusion. It turned out that way largely because the French King Henry II was accidentally killed in tournament and his successors were then confronted with internal troubles and civil war – the so-called “Guerres de Religion” which pitted Catholics against Protestants. It also turned out that way because Spain had to face and became embroiled with the Dutch Revolt and what turned to be “the Eighty-Years War”.
Finally, I should also mention that this recently published book (2012) includes a rather detailed bibliography for each chapter with titles in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German. Five stars.
