From the Back Cover
This book is a wide ranging and engaging account of the conquest of southern Italy and Sicily by the Normans during the eleventh century. The central figure in this conquest was Robert 'Guiscard' (the cunning), son of a minor landowner from western Normandy who, as Duke of Apulia, became the dominant ruler of southern Italy, and was a key figure in the European politics of the time.
While examining the process by which the conquest took place, Guiscard's role within it, and his turbulent role in the south, this work places the Norman takeover in context. It examines both the historical evolution of southern Italy before the Normans, which made the conquest possible, and the hybrid society which that conquest created. The relations of the Normans with their nominal overlord the papacy, and Guiscard's attempt to conquer the Byzantine Empire are also discussed in depth.
Founded upon an unrivalled knowledge of the original sources for the conquest, this is a cogent and lucid analysis of a key medieval subject hitherto largely ignored by historians.

The English reference on the Norman Conquest of Southern Italy
By JPS
This book was first published in 2000. Since then, it has become the English reference on the Norman Conquest of Italy with Graham Loud being certainly one of the leading experts on the Normans in Southern Italy.
As Loud puts it, this book is not exactly a biography of Robert Guiscard, the norman warlord who spearheaded the take-over of Southern Italy from the Byzantines and, together with his brother Roger, began the conquest of Sicily that his younger brother would finish. Instead, it is a narrative of the Conquest of Southern Italy, of Sicily and of Robert Guiscard's attacks on Byzantium.
However, it is also more than just a narrative because, throughout this well-structured book, Graham Loud explains the context of the various events, providing lots of useful insights. One example is his first chapter ("Southern Italy before the Normns"). Another example is his discussion of the so-called "conquest of the mainland" (a Conquest completed?), where he shows the limits of the conquest more generally. The term "Conquest" itself is even open to discussion prior to 1059, to the extent that a non-English speaking historian specialist in the Normans of Italy has preferred to use a plural rather than a singular. He has equated the period prior to 1057, when Robert Guiscard becomes Count, as a free to all during which multiple norman warlords grabed whatever they could size and hold. Little to do with a "conquest", which tends to suggest a masterplan and some kind of method.
The book has a lot going for it. It is clearly written. It shows the limits and weaknesses of Robert Guiscard's power and how, despite being invested by successive popes as Duke of Apulia, Calabria and Sicily (and although these lands were not for the pope to give, to begin with), his supremacy was contested, starting by the other Norman warlords. edurthe investure It also clearly shows that the various conquests were neither swift, nor easy, contrary to what some historians still state (such as Frankopan, most recently). It also describes Southern Italy and how it was governed after 1085, that is after the death of Robert Guiscard, showing the limitations of the warlord's domination, as tracts of his Duchy (and Apulia in particular) escaped the grasp of Roger Borsa, his second son and successor.
One aspect which is less than fully convincing is the discussion of the motives for the attacks on Byzantium, in 1081 and then again in 1084-85. When presenting these, Graham Loud restates the opinion generally held by most historians for over a century. This is the belief that Robert Guiscard really intended to conquer the whole of the Byzantine Empire (or what was left of it by that time). This view has been challenged by a couple of historians which the debate depending upon how weak the Byzantine Empire really was in 1081 and whether, and to what extent, Robert Guiscard may have been aware of this weakness. It should be noted that while the traditional view is to present the Empire as being close to collapse in 1081, heavily drawing on Anna Comnena's very biaised Alexiad, there is curently a tendancy among some historians of Byzantium to revisit and moderate these views.
Anyway, while certain aspects of the book may be open to discussion (there are one or two others in addition to the one mentioned above), it is certainly the most valuable reference and a starting point for anyone wanting to embark on a study of the early days of the Normans in the South.
