Amazingly, there are now several standard books on King Stephen Of Blois. His times, called by some "the anarchy" due to the constant civil war with Matilda(daughter of Henry I) and then her son, the great Henry Fitzempress or future Henry II. They were also labeled as such due to Stephens inabikity to control his nobles and people. He repeated broke his word and stepped back from his own threats....see the entire life of william marshal, which should have ended as a five year old swinging from a tree because his father wouldnt give stephen his castle.
So which history to go with? There is this one, which is sooo short but has most of the grit u need about the reign in general.
Then there is Edmund Kings books which cover the reign from numerous topics.
my pick overall would be david crouchs though. His scholaship of the era is possibly unsurpassed. Any check of a bibliography about this era inevitably will mention crouch.

An Analysis of the Anarchy

The Anarchy, during the reign of Stephen (1135-1154), is one of the most politically complicated times in all of English history. Henry I died and his sworn heir was his daughter Empress Matilda, a universally reviled individual (who also happened to be absent when her father died). Stephen seized the throne in her absence and gained widespread support partially because there was not precedent in England for female rulers.
R. H. C. Davis does an impeccable job explaining the complexities of the time with clarity and precision using primary sources and the backgrounds of each of the main players. Davis was one of the most well known proponents of intensive analysis of the primary sources and this analysis forms a strong basis for his conclusions. He reveals some interesting and sinister points about Stephen's character that conjure the actions of King John who ruled 50 years later, that had previously not been explored (both liked to seize potential enemies while they were theoretically immune at his court). What also contributes greatly to this volume are the profusion of charts in the appendix that show who was allied to whom at what time (this becomes immensely confusing without a visual reference) and what sources (and their bias) are used for what conclusions. This is an amazing scholarly work and although some conclusions might be outdated it is well worth your time.

How not to be king

This is a great book for those interested in the medieval English kings who might not be interested in the extensive details found in many biographies. At just over 100 pages, Davis's biography of Stephen is fast-moving and engaging while being completely grounded in the historical record. The book covers the reign chronologically and clearly explains the war between Stephen and Maud (daughter of Henry I) in which first one, then the other gained the upper hand. The war devastated the country. I found particularly affecting the quotes from the chroniclers themselves which come across nine hundred years later as pleas for help in a world that made no sense. "When the wretched people had no more to give, they (the combatants) plundered and burnt all the villages, so that you could easily go a day's journey without ever finding a village inhabited or field cultivated." Davis shows the damage that lack of leadership can do to a people just emerging as a nation. Stephen was deceitful and often cowardly; he favored his relatives and close friends with high positions of power so that they could personally take advantage of the position. He was good at the surprise attack but then just as often would back down when the going got rough. One of these ill-advised adventures led to his capture but Maud was unable to take advantage of the situation. (Maud was often accused of "arrogance" but it is difficult to tell whether that criticism would have been applied to a man in the same position in the 1100's.) One of Stephen's favorite tricks, as noted in the other review, was to get one of his enemies to think he was a friend and to put that person into an apparently secure environment around the king himself and then have him arrested. He thereby broke the trust of even his friends. Stephen took the kingdom that Henry I had gone a long way in forming and almost destroyed it. He finally had to sign an agreement that allowed him as the anointed king to stay in office while guaranteeing that Henry II, Maud's son, would follow him. This is a powerful biography.
