Dated and scanty history, but still fascinating stories.

Written in 1966, Tales of Old Jamaica is an example of the local folklore school of history. Clinton Black was the archivist in Spanish Town and writes like a local historian. The stories in the book, while interesting, are not detailed and often provide very little substance. Furthermore, the book was obviously intended for the tourist trade and the treatment of the subject is by turns sentimental and sensational.

I presume that much of this material would be difficult to find elsewhere, and it seems fairly widely cited. Interesting enough for a casual read, but probably of most use for someone looking for specific material about Jamaican folklore specific largely to the white settlers.
