Ideological Literacy

Brian V. Street is a good place to start in order to follow the disciplinary conversation around New Literacy Studies. In German Ideology, Marx makes the point that dominant groups have a way of making their interest and accompanying language universal, which is why some words enter the lexicon at a particular time. The word "Literacy" reflects this opportune timing. The word is just as steeped in ideology, and is marked by the interest of what Brandt calls sponsors of literacy. In Social Literacy, Street argues for an awareness of the inherent power relationships that mark any literacy model, especially autonomous models--which present literacy as a neutral technical skill.
