By focusing on the social, religious and political tensions that helped define the course of Prussian history, the book also throws light on the development of modern German history.

The rise of Prussia to a position of preeminence in the German world at the end of the nineteenth century and the unification of Germany under Prussia was one of the most important events in the history of modern Europe. It signified a transfer of power from the periphery (France and Britain) eastwards to the centre where it was to remain until the emergence of Stalinist Russia in the 1930s. However, the fact that German unification was brought about as a result of the Prussian military has led to many misconceptions about the nature of Prussia, and consequently of Germany, which persist to this day.Beginning in 1830 and finishing with the official dissolution of Prussia by the Allies in 1947, this book sets out to correct misconceptions about the development of Prussia and its role in German history. While traditional political concerns are not neglected, the book has a broad approach and includes chapters on conservatives and the monarchy, industrialisation, the transformation of the rural and urban environment, the labour movement, the tensions between Catholics and Protestants within the state, and the debate about the links between Prussian militarism and the final tragedy of Nazi Germany. Mnay things missed or forgotten

I read the first installment of the book and it was a good read and I was expecting the same from this book but I was very disapoionted. First onto the book.
The book does a good job explaining the revolution of 1848 but then it starts to go downhill talking about things that maybe had an important part in the history but were a very slow read. I am talking about religion in the new Prussia. and skipping any talk, and I mean any talk of Bismark, who was the greatest figure in later Germany/Prussian history. At least a chapter should have been devouted to him and his policies but he was just an afterthought in the writers thoughts about how Religeon was important in Prussia and it's Provicences.
Then the books talks about Agriculture, again, a very slow read with charts and facts that seem important only to the author and he fails to connect the dots, at least to me, in explaning why talk about this than the German unification of 1871. The problems of Unification were lightly touched on, unless they had to do with religion and agriculture.
As for the Weimar Republic, the book does a fair job (at best) to describe how it worked and were Prussia stood. At the very least he mentions that "Prussia has died" during this time, going with the theory of other authors but he fails to write anything else.
Onto WWII and again very little is talked about the Russians and the treatment of the population. Then comes the end, a very tragic end and at this point I was expecting something at least resonable but I did not recieve it. The book was a disapointement.
I think a much better effort can be made with information this author had. To talk about different subjects, charecters, that were important to the shaping of Prussia. But they were ignored. We should all remember this: A quote from the book says "Germany has wings, with East Germany as it's center" and Prussia as it's Eastern wing.
